2019 International Soca Monarch Semi-Finals: A Battle Of The Islands

Written by: Nekisha Cyrus

The 2019 International Soca Monarch Semi-Finals turned out to be a battle of the islands as artistes, noticeable, from Grenada and St Lucia produced high-energy, passionate, crowd pleasing performances as they faced the might of Trinidad and Tobago. The event took place on Sunday 10th February  as thirty-nine (39) finalists vied for a place in the finals to be held on March 1st at the Queen’s Park Savannah.

With Fay Ann Lyons-Alvarez (the only soca artiste to hold both the Power and Groovy soca monarch titles) as the newly appointed chairman, this year’s event saw some noticeable changes. For example, the semis was returned to its home at the Arima Velodrome with the restoration of the Power and Groovy categories.

This year twenty-three (23) contestants competed in the Groovy Category  and some of the highlights according to patrons were: new comer Grenadian Soca artiste V’ghn performing his hit song ‘Trouble in the Morning’, St. Lucian Soca artiste Teddyson John performing the soca anthem ‘Vent’ and Trinidad’s very own Swappi performing his crowd favorite ‘Party Start’.

In the Power Soca category, with (16) contestants competing, there was an abundance of high energy in the air. Some of the unforgettable highlights came from Grenadian Soca artiste, Mr. Killa performing his viral soca song ‘Run Wid It’. Another crowd favorite was also Grenada’s 2018 Soca Monarch winners Lil Natty & Thunda with their performance ‘Get in your section, and the water boss himself, Trinidad Soca Veteran, Iwer George performing his contender ‘Water Blessing’.
