Sokah Origins Worldwide: The Festival Edition

Written by: Nekisha Cyrus

The princess of Soca, Nailah Blackman and her team delivered yet another epic event this year as she celebrated her birthday once again with the third instalment of the annual Sokah Origins concert. This year’s theme ‘Sokah Origins Worldwide: The Festival edition’ brought with it some new additions including celebrity hosts and a change in venue.

The event took place at the beautiful Paraiso Gardens, Claxton Bay. Patrons were kept entertained throughout the night by the Sokah Origins huge DJ cast, Flag crews, Rhythm sections and not to mention Live performance from many Guest artistes including Turner, Swappi, Ravi B, Mr. Renzo, Blaxx, Isaac Blackman, Iwer George, Olatunji, Sekon Sta, Kes and many more.

Nailah was introduced on stage by one of her International Celebrity Host, Hennessy Carolina, the sister of female superstar rapper Cardi B. Nailah entered dressed in a sexy and fashionable red ensemble, one of her four outfit changes throughout the night.  Kicking off the performances singing her single ‘Baddish’ and later joint by Shal Marshal for their first performance of their hit release ‘Peppa’, she took us on a worldwide tour from country to country and genre to genre with her musical line-up throughout the night.

The songstress also performed many songs off her ‘The Reel’ EP album which was released earlier this year. These included hits like ‘Sweet & Loco’, ‘No Barbie’ and ‘Break it Down’ which featured Trinidad James who was casted to be there but unfortunately couldn’t make it.

Some other highlights of the night included live performances from fellow soca stars and Nailah’s good friends Sekon Sta performing ‘Aye Yo’ and later introducing Kes singing ‘Hello’ and a medley of his hits including ‘Savannah Gras’.

Stepping away from soca for a minute another highlight of the night was the hip hop segment hosted by International Guest Deejay, DJ Boof and a dancehall segment which featured live performances from some of the top local dancehall acts, including Trinidad Killa and Trinidad Ghost.

Though the evening waned, the birthday girl kept the atmosphere ‘lit’ as she continued to take us through many of her hits. She closed off the show with a high energy performance with her ‘Brave’ teammates, Sekon Sta and Erphaan Alves  joining her on stage.

Three years strong Sokah Origins is definitely becoming a staple in the soca concerts arena. The change in location though, produced mixed reviews from patrons. Despite there being a shuttle service provided, some complained of difficulty in finding the venue which resulted in the crowd taking some time to usher in during the earlier part of the night.

We at Caribbean Entertainment Hub will like to say congratulations to Nailah Blackman and her Management and Staff for another spectacular event. Now that Afrobeat creators have the opportunity to win the prestigious award in their own category it begs the question why hasn’t Soca gotten its own category yet? Like Afrobeat, Soca has also been around since the 1970s and it is also a fusion of different rhythms and styles. It has also gained worldwide popularity within the last couple of years and there are artists who are talented enough and deserving of the accolade.
