‘Unbothered’, this catchy beat with relatable lyrics, is a song that urges you to take a shot of alcohol to forget your problems. Easily a Caribbean fav, Gerard John a.k.a Slatta is the man vocally and lyrically behind this track; he hails from the village of Mt. Royal in Carriacou, Grenada’s sister-isle.
Since the January 2019 release of ‘Unbothered’, his life according to him started flowing in a different direction altogether. In Slatta’s words “I really became unbothered after that”. Later in 2019, he released his debut album ‘Darker Shades of Dark’ which features collaborations with fellow artistes Tamantha Chole, Lil Kerry, Boyzie, Tallpree and Chyst. The album in its entirety was produced by Xpert Productions who also co-penned ‘Unbothered’. It contains 10 tracks which highlights the many sides of Slatta musical talent.
Slatta recently dropped ‘De Tolo’ a freestyle version to Burna Boy’s Afrobeat track ‘On The Low’. It came about due to pure foolery in the studio. The song was playfully produced in 48 hours and released with a full-length video two weeks later. It seems like according to the lyrics of another one of his song, he’s “‘Wukking High’” because “Rum drinking like lime juice”.
Though his song ‘Ever Clean’ is riding the ‘Dust Raiser’ riddim with soca heavy hitters Fay-Ann Lyons and Bunji Garlin, this isn’t the first riddim he’s ridden with either. He’s there with Bunji Garlin on the ‘Anti Stush’ riddim’ which is another Xpert Productions produced riddim. He disclosed to me, however, “I’ve always looked up to the Viking way before I started doing music professionally, so reaching this point now is heartfelt. Much respect to him and Fay-Ann”.
With Kayak Mas (Carriacou’s carnival ) inching closer, Slatta recently released another big tune ‘Taggawuh’. Although at the time of this writing he hasn’t decided if he will be partaking in any of the competitions. However, in keeping with the spirit of carnival, he will be hosting his event ‘Shades of Dark’ which will feature in its lineup Lil Kerry, Boyzie and TallPree on February 18th, 2020, .
Working closely with Xpert Productions has proven to be very fruitful for Slatta as is evident by the volume of tracks released in the last year; many of which has become hits.
As for which Social Media he prefers? His following is largest on Instagram, so he definitely feels the love there. However about his Twitter followers, he said: “They feel like family to me because the interaction is a bit more personal.”
