Skinny Banton Wrong Again

Written by: Lesandra Scott

What can possibly be deemed the most relatable song for the season which has everyone in faithful relationships or not, shouting with vigor “What ah do wrong again, Lord? Tell me what ah do wrong again?”. These are the lyrics belted out by Shirlan George; more popularly known as ‘Skinny Banton’.

Though Trinidadian-born, Skinny Banton resides in Carriacou the sister isle of Grenada.  In the year 2011, he was crowned Carriacou’s ‘People’s Choice Soca Monarch King’ and went on to secure the title for two more years (2012, 2013). In 2015 came  ‘Soak it Good’, which propelled him to the semifinals of Trinidad and Tobago’s ‘International Soca Monarch’ (ISM) competition. It was in that very year that he had another single killing the airwaves regionally, ‘Front Yard Wet’. This song, like ‘Soak It Good’ became a chant especially on the road; revellers lost their minds when both were selected.

His success in 2015 wasn’t solely because of those two songs. Also released were ‘Ready to Chip’ and ‘Freedom Wine’ which altogether, scored him several nominations at the first annual Pure Grenada Music Festival in 2016. Out of the categories nominated, he walked away with the title of ‘Soca Artiste of The Year’. Then, in 2016 he was awarded the title of ‘Outstanding In Performing Arts’ by the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs.

When asked about the story behind ‘Wrong Again’, Skinny Banton admitted that the words did have some truth to it. According to him in regards to dealing with such a betrayal, he said “eventually we all get over hurt and pain” as for him personally dealing with getting cheated on in the past, “Life went on, yes I studied it.. but after a while,  I made decisions that were best for me.”

With the number of bookings he receives from Trinidad from staff parties to band launches, one can jokingly say that he is of Trinidadian descent.  As their Carnival  approaches, Skinny Banton is still undecided in participating in the International Soca Monarch (ISM) competition. According to him, it solely relies on if he feels the competition this year is the right move to make.  What he has confirmed however, are performances in the USA, Canada and a number of locations throughout the Caribbean.

Although Skinny Banton isn’t looking for any collaborations where ‘Wrong Again’ is concerned, if a remix were to happen, his intention is that it’ll be with someone who can do it justice by enhancing the song and getting it into other markets.

With several things deriving from his ‘Wrong Again’ success, including the Surviving Horn Challenge, Skinny Banton’s foot is definitely on the gas pedal.  Keeping the momentum going, he’s set to perform at ‘Summer Khan Dunn’ which is a 5-night soca cruise sailing from the US state of New Jersey to the island of Bermuda.  Royal Caribbean’s ‘Adventure of the Seas’ will be his first cruise performance; the ship sails from September 19th, 2020 to September 24th,2020.

We at Caribbean Entertainment Hub congratulates Skinny Banton on his success with ‘Wrong Again’ and on being a semi-finalist at ISM this year.
