When one thinks of the Soca centric islands in the Caribbean, Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbados normally come to mind. However it’s a known fact the other islands have been contributing plenty towards the genre for many a year.
Lil Natty and Thunda were solo artists for a while in their homeland, with Lil Natty following in the footsteps of his father Natty Nuclear Dread before teaming up with Thunda to create the potent force that has swept the Caribbean music scene.
The first year Natty and Thunda sang together, they went all the way to the National Soca Monarch held on the island. Their first showing there landed them a fourth place finishing with the hit song ‘Double Trouble,’ and the rest it seems, has been history.
Their dreams of regional recognition hit new heights when Machel Montano, the legend himself, collaborated with them on their song ‘Top Strikers’ which crowned them the road march champions for Spicemas 2017. This song was a true regional hit as it landed on island after island, topping the regional charts when it came to Road March selections.
The opportunity to share any stage with someone on the level of Mr. Fete himself was noted as an amazing experience. Even here in Barbados, a full year after the remixed song released, the song was the type of hype grooving soca piece, us locals love to enjoy at fetes and party cruises.
2018 continued in the winning ways for Natty and Thuna as they dethroned the defending Monarch of 2017, Boyzie, to become the new Soca Monarch Champion of Spicemas 2018, winning with their song ‘Get in Yuh Section.’ The song was highly liked by the judges and fans as it received a long standing ovation for all those who were gathered in Grenada National Stadium.
So what is next for this in-demand duo; well they have already been granted several opportunities to perform to large crowds in Grenada and in many other countries, including the United States, Canada and England. Fans, of course, would love to see them headlining more international soca acts in the region. Soca on the hill in Barbados first comes to mind, with the guys already performing briefly at Krave’s band launch. But we definitely need a much longer showing.
2019 promises to be a big and exciting year for Natty and Thunda; we look forward to seeing the energy and hype they will bring to the region.
