SAINt JHN: A Musical Tale Of Guyana And Brooklyn

Written by: Jamel Grahame

Being of Guyanese ancestry, SAINt JHN as he is now popularly known says he hopes to inspire young Guyanese with his storied journey within the music Industry. The Rapper, songwriter, and music producer has made remarkable waves on the international scene and has to date many successful hits to his credits. Most popularly known for hits like ‘Roses’ and of course his work on Beyoncé mega-smash ‘Brown Skin Girl’, SAINt JHN is now an internationally acclaimed artiste.

The superstar has, however, not forgotten his Guyanese roots.  In an interview with local radio station 94.1 Boom FM he spoke candidly of his Guyanese upbringing and the impact it has had on his life and career.

Born Carlose St. John Phillips, the talented musician said much of his upbringing was spent split between Brooklyn, New York; and Dennis Street, Cambellville in Guyana. SAINt JHN opined the two Geographic locations as worlds apart from a cultural perspective. He spoke of how his time spent in Guyana and the exposure to its culture has impacted the man and artiste that he is today. The young rapper is known for his penchant to speak his mind and his unabashed use of his platform to forward the causes he finds dear to his heart. He even spoke of redirecting funds donated to him to a shoot music video for the purpose of forwarding the ‘Black Lives Matter’ protest that ensued following the tragic George Floyd incident.

It is nothing short of remarkable that the talented musician remains humble given the tremendous success he has received throughout the course of his career. His mega-hit ‘Roses’ has topped many international charts including Australia’s and the UK’s which was surged by the Imanbek dance remix. He has also released a string of commercially successful and critical acclaimed hits and has also received writer’s credit for his work with many popular music acts with the inclusion of pop culture icon Usher Raymond for whom he co-wrote two songs for the album ‘Hard 11 Love’.

SAINt JHN has graced some of the biggest stages in the world. He played for Rolling Loud, Voodoo Experience, and opened for Post Malone during a string of shows on the West Coast in 2016. SAINt JHN was also included in the lineup of acts slated to perform for the 2020 Billboard Music Awards riding on the waves of the growing commercial and critical success of ‘Roses’.

SAINt JHN describes himself as the type of person that believes in bringing to others the opportunities that they deserve and credit some with his attempt to sign Guyanese musician Juke Ross to his label.  He would later differ to his friend KJ who he reportedly opined as better equipped to give the artiste what he needed to make a success of his career.  SAINt JHN has not, by any means, given up on his mission to bring opportunities to those deserving and has plans to return to Guyana with the aim of giving opportunities to artistes he believes are deserving.  In the interim, SAINt JHN said that aspiring artistes can use his story as inspiration.

“The road to success is a really long book and you have to read every page” were the words of wisdom offered by SAINt JHN to aspiring young talent. He further added that a shortened form of this narrative is that “Your hope will take you further than your feet ever will” so the sheer belief that you can do it is what will drive you to achieve your goals in life.
