Sabrina Francis ‘Caged Butterfly’

Written by: Lesandra Scott

As she sings to those that spare a listen, the soulful Grenadian singer, Sabrina Francis, tells a tale of boundaries in her newly released song, ‘Caged Butterfly’. Throughout the single, things that there are no room for are made known. “And there’s room for your body, but no room for your light, no room for your color, no room for your flight”, Sabrina sings.

The lyrics for the song is the collaborative work of Alesia Aird, Sabrina’s guitarist and backing vocalist, Dieter Burkhalter her Keyboardist, and Sabrina herself. The song’s video contains animated visuals done by Devika Joglekar with the lyrics sitting comfortably on a beat that basks in a pensive mood.

Given the current state of things, particularly #BlackLivesMatter and the pandemic, many battles are being fought. For a large number of folks, there is the grappling with insecurity, self-worth, depression, and even fighting to work through a creative block. The video for Caged Butterfly can be looked at through different motivational eyes. Its narrative can be interpreted to mean that despite the things caught on camera and continuously endured by black people, despite the anger and hurt felt each time racism happens and is blaring on the news cycles, black folks got to hang in there.

More generally, the narrative can also be interpreted in a motivational sense against anyone giving up.  Currently, life may be bleak and weary given the state of lockdown experienced by many citizens of the world. With the implemented curfews and strict guidelines to follow, a new wave of job losses, and the enforced work-from-home, thoughts of giving up have been entertained by many individuals. However, just like in the video, in the darkest of times, light can be shone to illuminate the doubt. As a crutch to hold onto through periods of depression, the song can act as a reason to simply not give up but instead, see things through.

Caged Butterfly was recorded by Dieter Burkhalter at Mount Agnes Studio in Grenada, he also did its arrangement. All vocals however are that of Sabrina’s. It was mixed by Samuel Baur and mastered by André Pousaz, both from Switzerland.
