Nadia Batson: The Lyrical Queen Of Soca

Written by: Nekisha Cyrus

When it comes to soca music, her pen game is unmatched. She has been the lyrical genius behind many of your favorite soca hits, whether she is singing them herself or simply credited as the songwriter. She is known as the Queen of Sass, a title that suits her bold and spirited persona that continues to infectiously connect with soca lovers globally.

She is a musical powerhouse in her own right; a talented vocalist, prolific songwriter and ambassador for soca music. She has made us ‘Shiver’ and ‘Catch Feelings’, but it’s ‘No Pressure’, because she is ‘Never Done’ when it comes to satisfying her ‘Posse’ from ‘One Island’ to another. If by now you are still wondering who we’ve been referring to for ‘So Long’, it’s none other than the one and only, Nadia Batson.

Queen of Sass- Nadia Batson

Born on December 7th, our Sagittarius songstress was destined for stardom. With a genuine passion for music and love for the arts from the tender age of eight it all began. Nadia musical journey has been one rooted in the continuous growth and development of herself as the artiste we all know and love today. In her teenage years, she became a member of an all-girls group called ‘Silhouette’ that won the late 1980’s TV show ‘Party Time’. She was also a professional background vocalist and the front line female vocalist of the popular band  know today as ‘Kes the band’.

Today, not only is she a well-known entertainer who has performed throughout the Caribbean, Canada and United States, but she is also the bandleader of her own All-Female Soca band known as ‘SASS Nation’.

She has given us many timeless soca hits, from popular Caribbean unity songs to Sassy Female anthems and catchy Groovy classics, but what continues to stand out the most is her knack as a songwriter for always hitting home with her unforgettable melodies and relatable lyrics. Here are some of our faves:

  1. So Long’

‘AA… Look Who

  1. ‘Shiver’

  1. ‘Caribbean Girl’

Baby…..your Caribbean girl

Honestly, this list can go on and on, when it comes to this lyrical queen’s catalogue. She has also written songs for many of the top Caribbean soca stars. Some of her credits includes Farmer Nappy’s ‘Hookin Meh’, Farmer Nappy & Destra’s ‘Technically’, Machel Montano’s ‘Pop ah Bottle’, Tizzy’s ‘Expose’ and Michelle Sylvester ‘Sleeping in your bed’; just to name a few.

Her consistency in delivering quality music throughout the years has played a significant role in her success today as one of the Caribbean’s Top Female Soca Artistes.
