Rising Reggae star Koffee made a historical win by snagging the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album at the 62nd Staging of the acclaimed music awards.
The 19-year-old artist who was born Mikayla Simpson won the award for her Rapture EP making her the youngest reggae act and also the first solo female artist to win the Grammy Category for Best Reggae Album. The Jamaican native while giving her acceptance speech in Los Angeles on Sunday, January 26, 2020, thanked the other nominees which she stated that she had “learnt a lot from”. Koffee in her closing remarks said “This one is for Reggae. This one is for Jamaica.”
The five-song EP Rapture was released in 2019 by Columbia Records and spent 32 weeks on Billboard’s Reggae albums chart after debuting at number one. The lead single on the EP Toast can be argued as one of the biggest reggae hits of 2019, making the playlist of former US President Barack Obama and Jamaican Prime Minister, The Hon. Andrew Holness.
Other nominees for Reggae Album of the Year were Julian Marley for his album, ‘As I am’; Sly and Robbie and Roots Radics for the album ‘Sly and Robbie vs Roots Radics’; Steel Pulse with the album ‘Mass Manipulation’, and Third World for ‘More Work to be Done’.
Koffee is set to perform at the Super Bowl Weekend (January 31-February 1) and Coachella in April.
