The GTT + star Guyana Singing competition has completed its preliminary rounds. As reported earlier, the competition has a long rich history of creating some of the biggest stars in the local music industry. The preliminary rounds have overwhelmed us with a wealth of musical talent. The Contestants of this year’s competition are creating a nearly impossible task for the esteemed judging panel that include: Gospel Artiste, Saiku Andrews; radio and television personality, Joel Ghansham; and appearing as a guest judge for the preliminary round Ashaka King, owner of pieces and things.
Amongst the talented field of singers is Kimberly Samuels who has established herself an early front runner after receiving WOWs from the judges for both her performances so far in the competition. Receiving a WOW from the judges means the contestant gets an automatic qualification to the next round. Kimberly Samuels was acknowledged by the judging panel for her powerful and commanding rangy voice. She is the only opera singer in the competition and poses natural captivating stage presence that were instrumental in her securing an automatic qualifying spot in the quarter finals.
Caribbean Entertainment Hub caught up with this noticeably excited budding talent who told us that she is still processing her immense success. In an exclusive interview with us, Ms. Samuels said that she is the holder of a Diploma in Theater Arts from the National School of Theatre Arts & Drama and has been teaching music in excess of Nine (9) years. Samuels also explained that she has worked in the Arts industry for most of her life in many different capacities. She believes singing opera makes her a unique act in the competition. Though she performs other genres of music, Samuel stated that opera is one of the most difficult musical genres to master and is therefore not very popular here in Guyana.
