Steven Ramphal Uniting Guyana With His Music

Written by: Jamel Grahame

Like the proverbial Silver-lining, Steven Ramphal shone through the dark cloud of controversy surrounding the coveted Carib Soca-Monarch 2019 competition in Guyana. Of east Indian descent, Ramphal decided to break racial stereotypes by contesting in a competition traditionally contested by Afro-Guyanese. Moreover, this year’s Soca-Monarch was notably mired in accusation of favoritism and social media scandals that threatened the very fabric of the prestigious event.

As a first-time contestant in the  competition, Ramphal accomplished the unthinkable, he was able to beat out competition favorites such as: the 2015 winner Jumo “Rubber Waist” Primo and the Crowd pleasing “Vanilla” and other experienced competitors. However, the defending Champion Brandon Harding held onto his crown by the narrow margin of one point. In reflecting on his time in the Monarch, Steven called the experience educational and motivating. Thus, out of a contentious competition a star was born.

The Soca-Monarch and Chutney-Monarch are regular features of Guyana’s Republic day (Mashramani) celebrations and the contestants for each are traditionally racially divided. A professional musician since he was 17 years old, Ramphal had competed regularly in the Chutney monarch competition but this was undoubtedly his year. He won the Chutney monarch with his song Rang Ke Bhare (Forget about your color) and was first runner up in the Soca-Monarch with his song of unity “Soca in meh Vein”, his most recognizable to date.

The Steven Ramphal brand of Artistry is characterized by the concept of advocacy through music. This is a big part of his appeal and why, as he opines, his music resonates with all societal demographics.  Ramphal uses his music to speak to the pressing social issues. For both Monarch competitions, he focused on National Unity at a time when the nation is living with the stench of racial hostility due to the prevailing political climate. When asked how his life has changed as a result of his inordinate success in 2019, Ramphal explained that he is most grateful that he has been granted a larger platform to spread his messages.

Ramphal, now a force in the local music, is clearly capitalizing on his expanding platform. He recently released a new song entitled “Woman is a blessing” which addresses domestic violence.  The song showcases Steven’s mesmerizing vocals and a more sensitive vulnerable side to his usually up-tempo sound. It is well received since its April 17th release and is destined to take Steven beyond the shores of Guyana.

Steven Ramphal explained that he discovered his talent and love for music while singing along with his uncle in church and it was from there that he was inspired to become a musician. He explained that though he has seen challenges in his career he doesn’t focus much on that since his life’s mantra is to make the best of what you have. The devoted husband and father, who doubles as a professional Photographer, credited his wife as a major source of inspiration for his journey as a musician. His future plans are to simply continue making music that inspires people to be their best. When asked what advice he would give to anyone endeavoring to have a career in music, Ramphal could be quoted as saying “If you love music and you want to do it professionally, then go for it. But no matter what comes your way always keep pushing your way to the top. It’s not going to be easy but it will be worth it.”
