Guyana Shines At Carifesta 2019 Country Showcase

Written by: Nekisha Cyrus

As the Carifesta festivities continues, the country night showcase is considered one of the most anticipated events to look forward to each night. Patrons are treated to a variety of cultural displays by participating countries as they give us a taste of their culture through music, theatrics and so much more. One of the featured countries in Carifesta, Guyana, recently took us on a trip to their homeland as they performed their theatre production ‘GUYANA: A Year in a Day’.

Stabroek was the original name of the country’s capital Georgetown between 1784 and 1812. The play highlighted many aspects of Guyana’s traditions and holidays celebrated in their country throughout the year which included Mashramani, Easter, Eid, Diwali, Phagwah, Emancipation, Amerindian Heritage and Christmas just to name a few.

The estimated 45 minutes production took place in a Guyanese market setting. The concept was developed by The Performing Arts Committee and directed by Esther Hamer. It was set in front of the Stabroek Market (one of the iconic structures showcased in the Grand Market). Also playing the lead role was the talented Guyanese actor Keon Heywood. Various sections of the performing arts featuring dance, drama, music and drumming came together to represent for this epic Guyana Night showcase.

Stay tuned for more updates from our CARIFESTA XIV coverage as Caribbean Entertainment Hub will be keeping you updated as the festivities continues. For more information on Carifesta 2019, you can visit www.carifesta.net.
