It was clearly a clash of the islands at the 2019 International Soca Monarch held on March 1st, 2019 at the Queen’s Park Savannah. With (16) contestants from countries such as St. Lucia, Antigua, Grenada and Trinidad and Tobago competing for the Power and Groovy Soca Monarch titles, the crowd came out in their numbers to witness the Fantastic Friday competition.
In the end Grenadian Soca Artiste Hollis Mapp aka ‘Mr. Killa’ walked away with the well-deserved 2019 International Power Soca Monarch title and the grand prize of One Million dollars, after a stellar performance of his carnival anthem ‘Run Wid it’, In second place, Soca Veteran Iwer George performing ‘Water Blessings’ and Grenadian Mr. Legz placing third with his single ‘Wining Challenge’.
In the Groovy Category Trinidadian Soca artiste Marvin Davis aka ‘Swappi’ walked away with the Groovy Soca title performing his hit single ‘Party Start’ with a special tribute performance to the late Mighty Shadow. In second place, St. Lucian Soca Artiste Teddyson John performing ‘Vent’ and young Grenadian Soca star V’ghn placing third performing ‘Trouble in the Morning’.
The 2019 International soca Monarch competition will be remember as the crowning of Jab Jab. Not only because of Mr killa’s win but for the frenzy created throughout the competition by the Jab Jab beat. Three of the finalist: Mr Killa, Mandella Linkz,and Natty & Thunda all created havoc with this beat among their supporters many who came from Grenada, their home country, to support.
Also winning the Massy Motors Producer’s Pick category was soca artiste Lincoln performing his single ‘You Bad Too’. Some other highlights of the night were guest performances by the Reigning Soca Monarch for the past three years Voice and Soca Queen Patrice Roberts, in addition to guest appearances by some of the 2019 ISM semi-finalists Lil Saint, Jadel, Salty and Chromatics. Ronnie Mc Intosh also made a special guest appearance.
Although the event started off a bit later than initially advertised, many patrons were please with new layout of the show. Many praised newly appointed Chairman Fay-Ann Lyons-Alvarez for breathing new life into the competition and many soca artiste also stated that they are looking forward to competing in next year’s event.
