Fox Searchlight Pictures recently unveiled the trailer for their new Peter Pan fantasy movie ‘Wendy’, which stars a young Rastafarian Antiguan actor by the name of Yashwa Mack in the lead role of Peter Pan.
With a member of the Nyabinghi tribe being casted in the lead, Rastafarians are applauding this move as a step in the right direction to start changing the negative perception often associated with their people and culture. According to Looptt, the Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Tourism and Investment, Mr. Charles Fernandez, also believes that Yashwa Mack’s appearance on the big screen is extremely important as it raises awareness about the Rastafarian community in Antigua & Barbuda and the wider region.
Additionally, with parts of the movie also filmed in Antigua & Barbuda, this has also benefited their booming tourism sector. An estimated three million EC in revenue was earned during the three months the cast and crew spent on the island. Antigua & Barbuda’s film Ambassador Bert Kirchner also worked on the production as a Producer/Film Commissioner with his son, Shabier Kirchner as Director of Photography, Second Unit. The country is notably becoming an attraction for the international film industry. The minister even shared that last February a Germany company spent a month in Antigua filming a series as well. Filming for the movie was also done in Montserrat, Mexico and the United States.
The long-awaited Fantasy film was written and directed by the Academy Award-nominated director of Beasts of the Southern Wild, Benh Zeitlin and follows the story of Peter Pan through the eyes of Wendy. We at Caribbean Entertainment Hub is excited to see our very own, Antiguan actor, Yashwa Mack starring on the big screen. The release date is carded for February 28th, 2020.
