If you happen to see someone on the street just jamming out with some headphones on, they are probably listening to Shaggy’s ‘Hot Shot 2020’. Released on July 10th, to celebrate Shaggy’s 20 years in the music industry, this year’s album contains tracks like ‘Boombastic’, ‘It Wasn’t Me’, and ‘Angel’ that were all the rage twenty-plus years ago.

Fun fact, Shaggy, who was born Orville Richard Burrell got his stage name due to the way his hair looked.

In 1995, the album ‘Mr. Boombastic’ earned Shaggy his first Grammy for Best Reggae Album (1996). Though, prior to this success, the singer/songwriter was quite an overlooked artiste. However, his place in pop culture was cemented with the 2008 release of ‘Hot Shot’ which turned out to be a mega-successful album, as in the United States alone it went platinum six times.

Since his early success, Shaggy has been able to remain relevant as an entertainer through continuously reinventing himself and collaborating with several artistes from various genres. One such collaboration was with a close friend and fellow artiste Sting, on the album ‘44/876’ in 2019 which earned the duo a Grammy. During the same year, Shaggy took part in ABC’s Live broadcast of Disney’s ​‘The Little Mermaid​’ as Sebastian where his song ‘Under The Sea’ was performed. He performed for Queen Elizabeth’s 92​nd​ Birthday celebrations the previous year and in 2019.

 

According to ‘Mr. Lover Lover’, his intention with the reissuing of ‘Hot Shot’ is to modernize the hits to “resonate with all these younger generations”. With this goal in mind, his collaborated single, ‘Banana’, done with Conkarah was used constantly on the social media platform, TikTok, which is a magnet for the younger folk.

Now, ‘Hot Shot 2020’ isn’t just a remastered album as Shaggy refused to go that route. Throughout the album, aided by his keen ear and well-honed skills, he merged different genres. However, the songs’ originality without a doubt can be heard acting as the blueprint for the remake. Shaggy, who felt opposed to re-recording all the songs on 2008’s Hot Shot, chose for the 2020 reissue ​‘Angel’, ‘Luv Me, Luv Me’, ‘Keep’n It Real’, ‘Hot Shot’ and ‘It Wasn’t Me’.

This year’s celebratory album features two versions; a Standard Edition 14-track album, and a Deluxe Edition which sports a cool 18-tracks. It also boasts producers who’ve worked with Lady Gaga (Martin Kierszenbaum), Nicki Minaj (Dwayne Shippy), and Vybz Kartel (Shane Hoosong).
