Jamaican Reggae artist Shaggy has been cast in ABC’s upcoming live adaptation of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Shaggy, the Mr Bombastic singer, will play the role of Sebastian the crab who is Ariel’s best friend and sings The Little Mermaid’s most famous song “Under the Sea.” Auli’i Cravalho, also known as the voice of Moana, will play the protagonist Ariel, with Queen Latifah as the villainous Ursula.
Shaggy wrote on Twitter that he was excited to be apart of the production. He wrote: “Thanx to the guys at ABC networks and the wonderful world of Disney for the opportunity!” Queen Latifah, in making the announcement of her role on Instagram wrote: “Fortunately I know a little magic… excited to be a part of The Wonderful World of Disney Presents The Little Mermaid Live! #Ursula #TheLittleMermaid #TeamSeaWitch.”
ABC had previously suspended plans of going through with the live concert but instead decided to but bring the ‘under the sea’ characters to screens as part of The Wonderful World of Disney collection. The live-action show is scheduled to premiere on November 5, 2019, in celebration of the original animated film’s 30th anniversary.
The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid will feature aspects of the set from the Broadway version of the show as well as costumes and music from the original film. The TV special will also have a mix of animation, live-action and puppetry and will be performed in front of a live studio audience.
