Top DJs Of The Caribbean Part 1

Written by: Lesandra Scott

Do you remember the last party you’ve been to?

Take a stroll down memory lane with me to the last fete you went, who was the DJ? Which song made you forget yourself with its transition? There’s no denying the fact that Caribbean parties are a hub for a darn good time, especially the waist rolling genre that is Soca. Friends around you, drink in your hand, you look around and see girls bubbling and guys ‘handling it’.  Now, as much as there are good parties, from time to time we partygoers end up with the short end of the stick. C’mon, let’s be real. More often than not, the disappointment always gets dumped on the DJ. On the other hand, there are those Disc Jockeys that once their name is on the flier, it’s an automatic yes! The way they play their sets, the crowd interaction, their choice of music and its transition, make them an easy crowd favorite.

The following paragraphs highlight those DJs throughout the Caribbean that don’t disappoint when it comes to shelling down a fete.

Dj Private Ryan working his magic

Let’s first focus on the twin-island republic that is Trinidad and Tobago. For many, the first name that springs to mind is International Disc Jockey Ryan Alexander better known as DJ Private Ryan. Described as the Pied Piper of Soca music, on Spotify, he has over sixty thousand monthly listeners and his top songs flex six-figure streams. At parties he carries the crowd on a musical journey, never disappointing those in attendance. Ryan also boasts the number one Caribbean Podcast which can be accessed on leading podcast platforms, Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts. He is also responsible for creating the worldwide Soca DJ festival, Soca Brainwash, and the much anticipated Soca Starter. Other DJs who have the love of the people include Travis World and Untouchable Sounds.

Going up the island chain we stop off at the island DJ Puffy calls home, Barbados. Widely known for his winning set at the 2016s Red Bull Thre3style World Finals is the deejay who is formally known as Andre Parris. With an eyebrow-raising resume, it includes him deejaying at Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma pop-up show held in New York. His often elite-in-attendance sets have been done in the presence of well-known acts such as J. Cole, Amber Rose and Jeremih.  Under his belt, he also holds records with Grenada’s self-proclaimed “Bad Boy” V’ghn and has played on the island several times over the years. Another top Bajan DJ worth mentioning is Jus Jay who was also a finalist in the 2019 Red Bull #Style Competition.

Speaking of Grenada, one of the island’s top DJs is Point Blank Menace.  This commander of sound can be found frequently on Power 95.1FM, which is one of the leading radio stations on the island and of course, on the party scene.  Playing for parties headlined by Nailah Blackman, Lil Natty and Thunda, King Bubba FM, DJ Puffy, GBM Neutron, Olatunji and Popcaan, he’s become a household name and over the years, a well sought after deejay. Now, apart from Menace, on the list of DJs that have the crowd’s approval are DJ Fearless Kevon, Selector Beast, Sub Junior, Bain, and DJ Blackstorm. On Grenada’s sister isle, Carriacou, owning the hearts of many are both DJ Jack and DJ Specialist.

This is the first in a two-part series featuring the top DJs in the Caribbean so stay tuned as we continue to spotlight the top DJs from the other islands.
