For the very first time, six Caribbean deejays have been selected as national finalists in the Red Bull 3Style DJ Competition.
This is the largest DJ competition in the world.
They are Jus Jay of Barbados, Untouchable Sounds of Trinidad and Tobago, DJ Spinn of Jamaica and DJ Quest hailing from Antigua. Additionally, Venezuela has two contenders in the mix: DartZero 75 and the lone female, DJ Maripaez.
For Antiguan, DJ Quest, his selection is the fulfillment of a career goal. “I figured that entering the Red Bull 3Style was the next step to my DJ career, just another way to be seen in the international market.” However, he soon realized this opportunity provided more than just visibility as he truly believes he has a great chance of taking home the grand prize. “I just had a gut feeling this year and went for it. I’ve been DJing since 13 years old, and what started off as a hobby eventually grew into a passion.”

DJ Quest added that DJ Puffy of Barbados, through his 2016 win, has opened the door for many other Caribbean deejays to repeat this feat and bring Caribbean music to the international scene. “Puffy winning in 2016 opened our eyes as entertainers to see that we can make it way further than just touring the region. He also showed the world that the Caribbean has so much talent to offer and is a definite force to be reckoned with.”
These six deejays will compete against each other and the eventual winner will go on to participate in the global final which will be held in Russia in April 2020.
According to the organizers of the event, the remedy for success is simple: “Each competitor plays a combination of at least three musical genres in their 15 minutes, aiming to impress the judges and the crowd, of course. The score points divided into four categories: Originality, Skills, Music Selection, and Crowd Response.”
