Sekon Sta Makes History With Sekon Sunday 2021

Written by: Nekisha Cyrus

Sekon Sta makes history as he hosted the first live soca event in Trinidad for ‘Carnival 2021’.

Yes, you heard right, we said ‘Live’- a Live Event with a Live Band, Live Entertainment, Live Broadcast, and a Live Socially Distanced Audience during Covid-19. So how did he do it you asked? Well, leave it to the creative and innovative minds of Sekon Sta and the EEEmpire team to successfully deliver yet another amazing Fetecert (Fete Concert) and the first live soca event for ‘Carnival 2021’.

Caribbean Entertainment Hub was there to witness it all as patrons live and online tuned in to see Sekon Sunday unfold on Sunday 10th January, 2021 at Queen’s Hall, Port of Spain. With an estimated 200 socially distanced specially invited guests, well dressed in their black and white formal dress code adhering to strict Covid-19 protocols viewing live, and thousands tuned in via CNC3, National TV station and via Sekon Sta’s Instagram live, excitement filled the air.

Despite having to enjoy the Fetecert in a more conservative manner, the third edition of Sekon Sunday continued to raise the bar in a seemingly effortless production. Sekon Sta alongside his soca friends delivered a much-needed taste of the carnival experience. The soca star line-up featured Farmer Nappy, Preedy, Voice, Nailah Blackman, Erphaan Alves, College Boy Jesse, Salty, Viking Ding Dong, Joshua Regrello, Jaiga, Mical Teja and Kris Kennedy.

The show kicked off with Sekon Sta paying homage to the nation as he sang ‘Let us Build a Nation Together’ a song sang by his father, the late Great Merchant. He was later joined by some of his fellow artiste friends in a musical tribute to some of soca and calypso musical greats in the first segment of the show. Then with anticipation building, it was onto the feting segment.

Sekon Sta performed a medley of his hits including ‘Sauce’, ‘Symphony’, ‘Aye Yo’, ‘I Swear’, ‘The Best’, ‘To the Max’; and many more showcasing his impressive and still evolving musical catalogue.

The Sokah princess, Nailah Blackman represented as the only female artiste act of the night. She graced the stage throughout the night performing alongside Sekon Sta and also giving us a taste of her latest release ‘Big Deal’ and hit single ‘Sweet & Loco’.

Another highlight of the show came when Farmer Nappy touched the stage performing his 2021 mega hit ‘Backyard Jam’. He was later joined by Jaiga who also performed his song ‘On De Inside’ on the ‘Backyard Yam Riddim’.

The niceness surely came when Voice reached in the fete. The three-time Soca Monarch king took time during his performance to share with the crowd how much he missed performing in front of a live audience before diving into his new releases ‘By Any Means’ and ‘Dancing Away’.

Overall, the night was filled with countless beautiful moments and memories. It also made clear the reality that carnival is truly a staple in our hearts and culture and will surely be missed this year. Although there was some backlash received, with some questioning the strict implementation of the Covid-19 protocols and the event’s safety in its entirety, we at CEH will like to state from our experience at the event, they were meticulously and strictly enforced by the management and staff at EEEmpire and Queen’s Hall. During the night artistes also reminded the live audience to follow the guidelines during their performances, when those moments of excitement stuck.

In a post on social media, Sekon later expressed his sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to making Sekon Sunday 2021 a success as he wrote:

‘I stand today, proud! Proud of my culture, proud of my Nation, proud of my team and proud of myself. Striking the perfect balance between entertainment and adherence was not easy but we did it. I am extremely excited about all the possibilities that using this template can bring to the entertainment industry. I still can’t believe that I was capable of seeing this all the way through from conceptualisation to concert’.

We at Caribbean Entertainment Hub will like to thank Sekon Sta and the EEEmpire team for allowing us to witness this history-making moment and we hope that this leap of faith will continue to spark future creativity within the entertainment industry.
