Jamaicans are sparing no efforts in making their mark on the international scene. Just one week after being number one in the UK 2018 X Factor competition, Jamaica’s Dalton Harris is at number one on The Official Vodafone Big Top 40 chart with his winners single: ‘The Power of Love’. Dalton was number one before, back in 2010 he won Digicel Rising Stars, the Jamaican equivalent of The X Factor.
On December 2nd, Dalton left the world in awe after a breathtaking performance during the competition’s finale, which was held at The Wembley Arena in London. The soulful singer was the frontrunner for much of the X Factor so it was no surprise when he took the crown over Anthony Russell and Scarlett Lee.
Jamaicans everywhere were tuned into the finals in anticipation after weeks of following the UK competition in support of one of their own. The announcement of Harris’ victory saw Jamaicans who were glued to their television sets, bellowing with excitement and joy. Popular disc jockey, ZJ Sparks started a buzz on social media after posting her reaction video to Dalton’s win. In the video, the DJ who was playing at an event (along with the attendees) took a break from here juggling to watch the live stream of the finals. At the announcement of his win, there was screaming and cheers all around.
Dalton who grew up poor comes from a large family with 22 siblings. The X Factor winner says that he grew up in a one bedroom house which did that not have basic amenities such as running water or electricity. Although having an improvised pass, Dalton expressed that his story isn’t a sad one because, in the end, he managed to overcome it all.
After winning the Digicel Rising Stars competition, his manager Donovan Germain helped him through school. Harris managed to Successfully pass six (6) CXC exams. In 2014, he released the single pauper which was number one on the Jamaican dancehall charts. Since Pauper, Dalton has since released three albums prior to making his appearance on X Factor. The singer described his audition as one of the most important moments of his life, sharing that he had been preparing for the audition for seven (7) years.
