Hybrid Soca: The New Generation of Soca Music Part 2

Written by: Nekisha Cyrus

In The first part of this series, we featured two emerging artistes (Chopikal and Cali Gray) who are adding their own new and exciting touch to Soca music. Here in part 2, we are introducing two more artistes who are adding their our flavour to create what we are calling Hybrid Soca.

Mical Teja Williams (photo above) is a Trinidadian Singer, Songwriter and Producer. He is also one of the members of the music production company System 32. With his infectious Afro-beat/ Soca fused style, he brings a different flare to soca music, which can be heard in some of his mainstream hits like ‘Practise’, ‘Rotate’ and ‘Calling’.

Mical also holds the ‘Eyeslam Superstar’ title for his single ‘Proud’ released in 2017.  As a producer, his impressive credits includes the ‘Want Riddim’ which features Patrice Roberts and Olatunji, and also produced and co-wrote the single ‘Bodyline’ which gained Ola entry into the UK’s X-Factor competition in 2018. He has also worked with soca heavyweights such as Machel Montano, Destra Garcia, Kes and new soca songstress Nailah Blackman.

Jonelle Manwarring

Jonnelle Manwarring is a Trinidadian Singer and Songwriter with the one of the leading music production company in the region, Bad John Republic and has worked with soca queens like Allison Hinds and Destra Garcia.

Jonnelle is a classical trained singer who brings a rich melodic style to soca music.  She was labelled the ‘Melanin Queen’ after her successful release ‘Melanin’ in 2018, and is presently the Red 96.7fm ‘Strictly Vocal’ title holder. Her latest release ‘Foli’ is the title track on the Foli riddim, which also features Soca power couple Bunji Garlin and Fay Ann Lyons.

Though fairly new to the soca scene, she has performed on stages in New York, New Jersey and Virginia Beach and definitely plans on releasing more music and representing her country worldwide.Who would have thought that soca music, a genre birthed by calypso, would years later be creating sub-genres of its own? But with great creativity, comes even greater innovation and we’re excited to witness this musical evolution.
