Hybrid Soca: The New Generation Of Soca Music Pt 1

With the likes of new soca superstar Nailah Blackman gaining international recognition with her unique sound, and music lovers struggling to coin new names to describe this modern era of the soca genre, the global demand for the new continues to increase and with it avenues being created for emerging talents to explore.

Here are a few remarkable artistes who have been making some major contributions and adding their flavour to the evolving soca pot.

 

CHOPIKAL

 


Chopikal – When Ya Ready

 

Sean Padmore, stage name Chopikal (photo above), is a Trinidadian Singer, Songwriter and previous member of the popular group Nebula 868, known for hits like ‘Words Can’t Explain’ and ‘Temptations’ and even had the privilege of opening for the Queen herself, Trini-born Superstar Nicki Minaj.

He also co-wrote the hit single ‘Sound Bang’ for EDM chart-topping group Major Lazer featuring the King of Soca, Machel Montano.  This year he successfully ventured into his solo career releasing his first single ‘Anchor’, which samples Machel Montano’s ‘Fast Wine’.

His latest release ‘When Ya Ready’ is already changing the typical view of soca music as it introduces a unique Pop/ R&B fusion that has been sweeping the airwaves.

 

CALI GRAY

Cali Gray is a Trinidadian Singer, Songwriter and Performer based in New York. Cali’s unique crossover Soca/ Dancehall/ Pop style continues to push the traditional envelope.

She was the first Caribbean-born act to perform at the popular Festival at Sea annual cruise, alongside international R&B Stars like Anthony Hamilton and En Vogue. And was also the only soca act at the Hip Hop Coast 2 Coast showcase in Brooklyn, New York.

 


Cali Gray – Hot Gal Army

As Cali Gray continues to fly the soca flag high internationally, her new single ‘Hot Gyal Army’ has been taken over the airwaves, adding to her successful musical catalogue with hits like ‘Wicked’, ‘D Goods’ and ‘All Over’. Cali Gray – Music Video ‘Hot Gyal Army’
