Though soca is the primary music of choice in her homeland, St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ entertainer Vasita ‘Sita Di Lyrical Diva’ Caine has never shied away from being a trailblazer, diving headfirst into the dancehall arena. Sita is however no stranger to soca, her biggest and most recognizable hit to date is in the soca genre ‘Matey (Your Man Is My Man)’ recorded in 2020.
Sita’s musical journey started while she was still at school. Freestyling sessions were a norm during their downtime between classes. Thoroughly intrigued by those impromptu lyrical battles she stepped in and proved herself a worthy adversary against her male counterparts. Fuelled by the adrenaline that raced through her veins after those sessions, there was no doubt in her mind that she was meant to be an entertainer. Adopting a style that lent itself automatically to dancehall she was determined to make her presence felt as she eventually embarked on her musical career. The vivacious performer noted, “I fell in love with the beat of Dancehall music, I love the pulsating baselines and sentence structure of the music.”
Sita has the enviable distinction of being the first recognized female dancehall artiste from her country, an accolade which she does not take lightly. She has set the bar high for those following in her footsteps becoming the first dancehall artiste from St. Vincent and the Grenadines to perform dancehall internationally and was a two-time award winner of the Association of Music Professionals (AMP.) She was also the first St Vincentian to be featured on a major Jamaican rhythm featuring stars Vybz Kartel, Spice, and Demarco. An appearance alongside Bounty Killa is one of the highlights of her exciting career.
Sita has built up a following which extends beyond her native shores. Barbadian audiences were treated to a taste of her talent when she participated in the International Bashment Soca Competition. She impressed patrons with a fiery performance, spewing biting lyrics about her fellow competitors.
‘Di Lyrical Diva’ has consistently sought new ways to keep her supporters satisfied. Outside of performing, her varied projects have included giving fans a glimpse into her life through her reality show. However, with COVID-19 severely impacting the entertainment scene globally, Sita is stepping into unchartered waters, making her debut in music production. She excitedly shared, “I have a new riddim that would be released in early April. I am working with new artistes Jah Carleon, D’lux, Kripted, Smaddy, and Dlanlord .” She is especially humbled by having veteran artiste Problem Child work on the project.
Sita remains enamored with all things musical so switching lanes was a welcomed transition. “This is my first time co-producing a riddim. I asked Spaceboy Studios about an idea I had, and he was immediately in love with it, Lester Ihora is like my big brother in music and also assisted with its production. It was really satisfying hearing music come to life.”
Her years of experience were beneficial as she worked closely with some of the artistes even assisting with writing. She noted, “It was the first time recording for some of them and they required assistance.” Though the process was tedious at times she lapped up every moment of it and being a perfectionist, everything had to be just right. Sita kept her eye on the prize, “Hearing a marketable product, in the end, makes all the hard work worth it!” she added proudly.
Sita’s talent is limitless and she can not wait until this new project is being blasted on the radio.
