The Queen of Dancehall, Grace Hamilton aka ‘Spice’ is getting candid in her latest interview with Forbes Magazine. Yes, we said Forbes Magazine!
The ‘Go Down Dey’ singer who recently released her debut album ‘Ten’ shared with Forbes how she has maintained a successful music career over the years while wearing many entrepreneurial hats. During the interview, Spice also talked about breaking the cycle of generational poverty and creating wealth for herself and her family.
The born and bred Jamaican singer, shared what it was like growing up in Portmore, Jamaica with her mom and five siblings after her dad passed away when she was nine years old. Grace recalls her mother struggling and working hard to provide for her and her siblings.
“I tell my mom that she’s my inspiration because I watched her struggle with all of us. She truly made something out of nothing. My mother would cook one pound of rice and make sure that we all were full. We felt like we had ten pounds of rice! I come from humble beginnings, and I managed to overcome all of the adversity and boss up. On top of that, I lost my house due to a fire when I was in high school. I remember coming back from school, and my house was gone. My tagline now is, “From Homeless to Owning Houses.” Now, I own multiple homes between Jamaica and Atlanta. My journey has been a rough one, but I always tell people, “It’s not how you start the race. It’s how you end that. matters.”
Today, as a Billboard-charting artist with over 20 years in the business and thriving Businesswoman, the Dancehall Diva is sharing her rags to riches story to encourage anyone living in poverty, that they too can work hard and get out of it. Listing her many businesses which include her own label ‘Spice Official Entertainment’, a clothing line ‘Graci Noir’, and her ‘Faces & Laces line which features wigs, make-up, and beauty products.
“My plan as an artist was to become successful. I always wanted to be unique, energized, and keep people on their feet. My music makes you want to move. That’s why I continually reinvent things and stay consistent. Many people don’t know, but I started when I was young and made a name for myself. When you hear Spice, there is a dancehall song that most people remember. Whether it’s old or new, my goal is to make good music that will last forever.”

When it comes to maintaining and accumulating wealth, Spice shares that it takes time and discipline.
“I believe that it is important to create multiple income streams to build wealth. I have multiple streams of income and various businesses…
Managing multiple businesses isn’t easy. As an entrepreneur, you have to make the best and sometimes hard decisions about hiring and firing. You can’t tag along with people who don’t have the same vision as you or share the same dream.”
When asked what inspires her drive and inspiration behind her hard work, Spice explained:
“My past has inspired them. The fact that I’ve been so poor and I never want to go back there. I am also a mother with two kids and I’m working diligently to break the generational curse of being born into poverty. I’m still working hard to create a bright future for all of us.”
And lastly, we all know when it comes to empowering and encouraging women, Spice is all for it! This is what advice she wishes to share with women as they push boundaries and pursue their dreams:
“Never to take no for an answer. As long as you believe in yourself and your product, go for it—even if others don’t believe in it. Two things I live by are prayer and hard work. It doesn’t matter what you have right now. Pray hard, work hard, and you will be successful.”
We at Caribbean Entertainment Hub, will like to congratulate Spice on all her success thus far and we know that she surely has a lot more in store. If you haven’t listened to her brand new album ‘Ten’, you should definitely check it out!
