Soca Artiste Jaiga Debuts New Book on Emotional Intelligence

Written by: Nekisha Neicy Cyrus

Trinidadian Soca Artiste Terrin ‘Jaiga’ Callender has now officially added ‘Author’ to his already impressive list of accomplishments. As a wearer of many hats within the Trinidad and Tobago Entertainment industry from TV Host & Producer, Radio Host on the popular 96.1fm and well-known Soca Artiste with hits songs like ‘Speakerboxx’, ‘Action’, ‘Anyway’  among many other titles.  This latest venture has earned him the title of author.

Debuting his new book ‘Everyday Lessons in Emotional Intelligence, A Caribbean Perspective’, which he co-wrote together with Dr. Amala Luncheon, who was born in Guyana and lives in Saint Lucia. Dr. Amala Luncheon who recently completed her doctoral dissertation on emotional intelligence reached out to Jaiga after stumbling across one of his shows on YouTube. In an interview with LoopTT, Jaiga explained that Dr. Luncheon invited him to sit on a panel for last year’s Black History Month.

“After that people wanted to know who I was because I was the only one without an academic title and she said she thought I would be perfect to partner with her on the book. I said I can’t write but she said all I need is for you to come in the studio and give me some time. It was us exchanging stories, giving my take on how I think things could be and due to that, she offered to assist me going forward and through her I got some credits to do a course on Emotional and Social Intelligence at David University. I worked seven hours a day for three months to complete it,” said Jaiga who is now officially certified.

The book is written specifically in the context of the culture and social background of Caribbean people and how their surroundings influence their minds and actions. As Jaiga explains, ‘Emotional Intelligence’ is the understanding of self and others and the aim of the book is to show readers that Emotional Intelligence is not the same as IQ, you do not have to be born with it, it could be taught.

In a lengthy caption shared via Instagram, Jaiga shared the following:

Sometimes in life you go through things that seem overwhelming and you think no good could come from it. Sometimes you grow. You may not always see your own growth immediately but when you look back you can see you are much further than when you started the journey.

Other people are sometimes ahead of you on the journey and can help guide you, they see your potential and see how good you are despite how you see yourself. I was on a journey after a few bad years. I thought it best to fix me, everyone else may not be the problem. The insight that I have gained from therapy and the new perspective from which I view things now placed me squarely in the path of another growth opportunity.

I met the most amazing person and she wanted to collaborate with me! Don’t get me wrong, I know my worth and my strength but Dr. Amala Luncheon has taught me to see myself in a whole new light! When she approached me with her vision for this project and the role she taught I could play, I was interested and I listened. I agreed but the more I thought about it, the more I saw the value and I suggested elements that you will see unfold soon. This creative process has been a positive for me during the pandemic and I look forward to sharing the journey with you all!
