Deemed by many as the ‘Cult Pastor’, this Jamaican “man of religion”, Kevin O. Smith, has for the past few weeks created quite a disturbing stir. Smith, who was in police custody since the deaths which occurred at his church, Pathways International Kingdom Restoration Ministries, on October 17th, was being transferred from Freeport Montego Bay Prison to Kingston when he met, what many are calling, his “predicted death” in a car accident on Monday, October 25th. In an interview given by Kevin while in police custody, he said that those who go against him will fail as he’d be taken from them in somewhat of a blink of an eye. However, although now deceased; the extent of Smith’s command and the hold he had over his congregation were deadly
It was reported that the 39 members of Kevin Smith’s church who were arrested with Smith made guilty pleas for breaching the Disaster Risk Management Act. The result of this violation summed up to either 20 days of imprisonment or a fine of $1,170,000 Jamaican dollars. This charge is due to the part they each played in the cult-like activities under the leadership of Kevin Smith. This head-turning and hard-to-believe-in-2021 type of activity have the rest of the Caribbean and places such as the United States and India looking questioningly at Jamaica.
Since news of his church’s dealings went mainstream, artistes and esteemed folks in Jamaica’s society have made known the distance between themselves and Smith who it seems held quite a few of them in high regard. Among the artistes firing back at Smith was Anthony B who went to the studio to make it known how much he’s against Smith. His Instagram caption for the track said “Join I Bun Out The Liar Pastor No Blood Sacrifice Inna Jamaica.” In his recorded song clip, he sang: “Teefin church, liad pastor; wi nuh want no blood sacrifice inna Jamaica.” Other artistes Smith said he had a deep respect for include the Marleys, Chronixx, Capleton, Richie Spice, Mutabaruka, Sizzla, Christopher Martin, and internationally, Snoop Dogg. Also letting it be known how he feels about the Cult Pastor is Vybz Kartel who days after hearing about the human sacrifices announced the release of his single “Temptation 2-False Prophets”. Ce’cile who has been pictured in a photo with Warren Weir and Kevin Smith has publicly made it known where she stands which isn’t at his side.
On the day of the now worldwide known incident, Kevin Smith wrote on Facebook: “The Ark is loading now! Leave immediately dressed in white … It is a Roman Catholic sacrifice, it will have no survivors.” To his followers, he told them to leave behind their cellphones but ensure that it was wrapped in foil.
Hours later, a young lady believed to be from his congregation wandered into a police station and showed officers stab wounds and described what was currently happening at the church as a ritual. Around 7 pm, law enforcement made up of soldiers and the police force made their way to Pathways International Kingdom Restoration Ministries where they were greeted with bullets and violence against them from church members dressed in all white. However, when the police unit got the upper hand, they discovered a dead 39-year old Tanecka Gardner laying face down with her neck slashed as she was a human sacrifice. Then they found a gentleman who was shot and suffered knife wounds to the back. It was understood that he was to be the second sacrifice and he admitted that his wounds came at the hand of deceased pastor, Kevin Smith. It was said that from a laptop recovered at the scene of the crime, there was information supporting that 144 people were to be killed as human sacrifices.
