Redemption 6: An unforgettable night of Reggae Music

Written by: Nekisha Cyrus

For the past six years, Reggae music has been celebrated in Trinidad at the popular concert series known as ‘Redemption’. Each year the franchise delivers an unforgettable night of music which features some of the Caribbean’s Top Reggae stars and icons. This year’s Redemption was held on Saturday 1st June 2019 at Trinidad’s concert capital, the Queen’s Park Savannah. The venue had one of the largest patronage, both young and old, who came ready to sing along to every word and dance the night away, and that they did.

This sixth installment of Redemption featured six (6) of Reggae’s music finest and included both young and seasoned vocalist. Kicking off the night’s performances was the international Reggae superstar Maxi Priest, followed by the multiple-award winning reggae artiste Christopher Martin.  Although it was Chris first time performing in Trinidad, he had the crowd singing along to every song, including ‘Pirate of the Caribbean’, ‘Let Her Go’, ‘Cheater Prayer’, and his brand new single ‘Life’ just to name a few.

Gracing the stage next was the living legend and Redemption favorite, the one and only Beres Hammond who has performed at all Redemptions so far. Backed by his ‘Harmony House’ band, Beres had the crowd belting out the notes from well-known hits like ‘Rockaway’, ‘I Feel Good’, ‘They Gonna Talk’, ‘I wish’ and many, many more.

The Prince of Lover’s Rock, Romain Virgo backed by his live band, did not failed to charm the ladies as he performed many of his hit songs and reggae covers like ‘Soul Provider’, ‘Stay With Me’, ‘I am rich in Love’, and ‘Melanin’. He was later joined on stage in an epic performance by Christopher Martin to perform their hit collab ‘Leave People Business Alone’.

With each performance as equally impressive as what came before, the night continued with Reggae royalty Tarrus Riley gracing the stage alongside his band. Tarrus, another crowd favourite, had the ladies singing many of his hit songs including ‘She’s Royal’, ‘Just the Way you are’, ‘Don’t Come Back’, ‘Gimme Likkle One Drop’ and others. He even gave the crowd a surprise reggae with steelpan combo when he invited Trinidad All Stars’ pannist Dane Gulston and Jamaican iconic Saxophonist Dean Fraser for an unforgettable musical fusion moment. Their performance was magical and made one appreciate the musicianship that was delivered on this Saturday night.

With Tarrus  in his elements, you can tell that the audience was being hypnotized by the sweet reggae music and they were seen dancing and swaying from side to side under the stars above. For nothing can compare to hearing some of your favorite reggae artiste accompanied by a live band; it was a truly memorable experience!

And lastly, closing the show the undisputed king of rockers and reggae icon Half Pint who took us on an unforgettable trip down memory lane with hits like ‘Just Be Good to Me’, ‘Substitute Lover’, ‘Greetings’ and ‘Hold On’.

Overall, it was truly an incredible night of pure reggae music, a celebration of love and unity. With that said, we at CEH are already looking forward to covering Redemption 7.

Special thanks to the management and staff at Tropix Entertainment and IP Music International on a job well done.
