A gospel singer for the Soca monarch? This has been a trending topic as Guyanese anxiously await the highly anticipated Soca monarch.
Guyana’s newly appointed Minister of Culture Youth and Sport recently announced the many changes to the customary Mashramani Celebrations including the postponing of the national costume float parade and other activities such as the Soca and Calypso monarchs. These events are slated to be held in March with dates still to be determined. The activities are likely to be held virtually as well since the Minister states clearly that he will prioritize the safety of the populous even as we celebrate Republic 51. It is however the Soca monarch that is so far causing a social media stir amongst Guyanese.
Guyana’s Soca Monarch has been characterized by controversy and excitement. From controversial decisions to accusations of favoritism this competition never disappoints and the 2021 Monarch seems to follow in the same vein. Many have already thrown their hats into the ring for this year’s monarch beginning with the reigning Soca monarch Jumo Primo eyeing a title defense. Jumo seems on a mission to disprove ageist arguments that he should pass the baton. Many including last year’s hot newcomer Kady Kish, Diana Chapman, and others are already signaling their intent to be a part of the competition. There’s been no confirmed word from many favourites including Brandon Harding and the past monarch winner Kwasi Ace has confirmed that he will not be participating in this year’s competition.
As alluded to earlier, the Surprise entry of gospel artiste Samuel Medas is making headlines. Samuel Medas is arguably one of Guyana’s biggest gospel music acts. He is known for bringing a modern contemporary sound to traditional gospel music with many hits to his credit. It was quite a shock to many when he announced following the release of smash hit ‘Stadium’ that he would contest the 2021 Soca Monarch. Many are labeling Medas’s hit as the early favourite to win the competition. Should he be able to complete this task and win the monarch, it will a game-changer and a historic moment for the Christian Community.
Samuel Medas’s hit is still trending on social media as patrons upload videos of themselves enjoying the undeniable vibe. Caribbean Entertainment Hub wishes to congratulate Mr. Samuel Medas and all the other artistes contesting this year’s monarch and look forward to keeping you posted as regards what promises to be yet another exciting soca Monarch battle 2021.
