Payge Turner Won Her Battle Round On The voice

Written by: Simone Tull

Payge Turner stamped her vocal authority on The Voice stage winning her Battle Round on the hit American tv show . The talented Trinidadian born singer emerged triumphant over sixteen-year-old Lauren Frihauf in the pairing,  but her youthful opponent was no walkover.  In the keen vocal contest, the duo sparred on  Julia Michaels’ If the World Was Ending after having the benefit of her guidance in the preparatory stages for this showing.

It was no holds barred as both singers brought their A-game. In the initial seconds of her performance Turner showcased her smooth lower register before unleashing the phenomenal range of her unique voice. Frihauf was not to be outdone as their voices merged in spectacular harmony. The spinetingling performance by the duo  was arguably  among the frontrunners for the night.

Judge Kelly Clarkson immediately remarked “That was so intense, Payge I could not keep my eyes off of you. There is something so special about your tone.” Despite being impressed with Frihauf’s magical performance she gave Turner the edge. Blake Shelton, who lost out when Turner chose Stefani after the blind auditions, quipped he still felt like she was a part of his team. He too chose Payge. John Legend was also enamoured with her performance. He assured, “Payge your voice has the depth, the character and the range.” But with Frihauf’s strong performance he was on the fence about who should be selected.

Their coach Gwen Stefani  had the unenviable task of selecting the winner of this battle royale.  The highly acclaimed singer explained, “Both you guys are equally artistic. The music and the emotion is really coming from deep inside.” Her belief that she has seen only a tip of the iceberg when it comes to Turner’s vocal talent cemented her decision.

A collective sigh of relief was breathed across the region when Payge Turner  advanced to the next stage. Excitement to see what new levels of artistry she will reach as the competition progresses is sure to keep Caribbean viewers tuned in.
