Olatunji New Band TADOW!

Written by: David Lawrence

TADOW! Olatunji’s signature song is now the name of his new band.

Olatunji Yearwood launched the band over the weekend of December 1st 2018. The location was at the Escape Fest in Penal, Trinidad. The four-member band comprises: Kernal Roberts the drummer and musical director who is also a front-line vocalist and former musical director for Machel Montano’s band, Odelle on keyboards, Tone on bass and Kwamz on ableton.

With only four days of rehearsal, the band Tadow was tight, crisps and rocked the house with their magnificent execution of Ola’s songs. Olatunji Instagram account stated: “words cannot express the magic that happen last night”. With this band, Ola is now more equip to fulfill his self-appointed role as Soca Ambassador to the world.

According to Looptt.com, Olatunji said “While I was in the UK people kept saying they would love to see me with my band they performing so I spoke to my team about it and enlisted the partnership of Kitch who is our musical director and TADOW the Band was formed.”

We at Caribbean Entertainment Hub welcome this bold move by Olatunji. Again, this shows that he is very confident in himself and his music as demonstrated by his performances of only his own Soca compositions in the recent X factor competition; see our article “Olatunji In The X Factor live shows“.

Since the drastic change in the music industry over the last two decade (as outlined in Soca Rising ), Soca music has been suffering from the lack of live music in the fetes and “real” musicians performing in studio recordings. Ola has now joint Kes and Machel and a hand-full of other Soca artists who with the dynamic sound and power of live music will be mashing up the fetes for carnival 2019.

All the best to Olantuji and his band to whom we say TADOW!

Now that Afrobeat creators have the opportunity to win the prestigious award in their own category it begs the question why hasn’t Soca gotten its own category yet?
