It was like a chant. You heard it everywhere: the buses, public spaces, little kids from the top of their lungs screaming, “If jab was a class ah woulda more dan pass!”. It was everywhere. This song, “Jab Exam”, which even became people’s ringtones; sits on the Jab Antidote riddim which was produced, mixed and mastered by Stick To The Plan Entertainment.
So, let us talk about the man behind the song “Jab Exam”. A Grenadian through and through, born David Connell, Jab King is no stranger when it comes to music that makes people “start to move like jab”. Recent years saw him become a crowd favorite with hits including “Bat Ah Fly”, “Start To Move Like Jab” and “Atwah”. This year for what was supposed to be Grenada’s Spice Mas season, Jab King, confidently delivered what people have grown to expect; a catchy singalong infectious song.
The video, currently sitting at almost a quarter-million views, was shot and edited by GLR Productions. At the start of the video, Jab king stands in a classroom and roleplays what it’d be like if he was the knowledge giver or the professor. According to him, “Jab will give them no homework, ah pot ah Oil Down learn to cook”. For you see, in the words of Jab King, “I does handle mas in a type ah way, smell the old oil from miles away”. This video in its own way can be deemed a cultural nod: seen on people’s skin, old oil; worn on their heads, horns; and of course, Grenada’s national dish, Oil Down; all contributing to the essence of the island’s culture.
Here is a compilation of some of Grenada’s 2021 Soca releases. Some were created for what would have been this year’s Spice Mas and the others were created simply for the love of one of music’s whine-prompting artforms, Soca.
