“It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” The lights, the breeze, and the music on the streets make us know that Christmas is here. We can most definitely feel it in our bones, as we plan for that day when we celebrate family, friends, and love. Mouths are watering just thinking about the stew, jerk, cake, and sorrel, but let’s not forget the good vibes and good music. We from the Carib sea are merry because the sun is always here; it is with us if we are in the tropics or in our hearts if we are in distant lands.
Reggae Christmas music though mellow at times, are humorous, lively and infused with the rhythm of the islands. They make our hearts lighter and our bonds tighter, may contain a message in the lyrics and sometimes poke fun at Santa coming to the Caribbean; “Faith D’Aguilar” does this in her comical song, ‘Santa Ketch Up Ina Mango Tree’. The one drop rhythm is like the back and forth of the sea waves and the slower more mellow carols are like the cool breeze at evening. All these songs remind us that love, joy, laughter, celebration, thanksgiving, and a good plate of food brings joy to the season.
Here are some reggae Christmas classics and newer songs straight out of Jamaica from us to you and yours. Enjoy!
