CEH April 2020 New Chutney Soca Releases Spotlights Tony Cuttz

Written by: David Lawrence

From Tony Cuttz the Barber to now Tony Cuttz the artist, Remesh Brijnauth is currently one of the most popular Chutney singers in Guyana. His hit song ‘My Johnny Walker’ has made him a sensation among Chutney fans not only at home, but also in Trinidad, and North America. It has accumulated over four million views on YouTube so far.

Tony’s musical inspiration came from hearing his grandfather sing old Indian melodies every night before he went to bed. At about nine years ago, Tony sang gospel at church. But it would be a while before he became serious about making music his profession. He moved to Trinidad and tried his hand at different crafts before finally settled on barbering. His business was called ‘Tony Cuttz’ and thus his stage name. On moving back to Guyana, three years ago, one of his customers, Vicadi Singh ( a Chutney singer) discovered Tony’s singing talent and took him under his wings encouraging him to venture fully into music.

Tony has not rested since striking gold in 2020 with ‘Mr Johnny Walker’. He was a finalist at both the International and the Guyanese Chutney Soca competition. He has already released several hits in 2021, “Leh We Go’, ‘Way You Been’, and ‘By Me’. The latter two have been included in our playlist below.

Now that Afrobeat creators have the opportunity to win the prestigious award in their own category it begs the question why hasn’t Soca gotten its own category yet?
