Meet Celebrity Publicist Roxxi Chung

Written by: Nekisha Cyrus

Meet Tracy-Ann “Roxxi” Chung, the Founder and CEO of “Roxxi Chung PR” who is redefining the role of a publicist in the entertainment industry. With her immense passion, skill set, experience, and drive, she is definitely a ‘must-have’ asset to your team and has become one of the most sort after PR professionals in the game who specializes in upcoming artists with Caribbean backgrounds seeking to break into the North American market.

Roxxi was born and raised in Jamaica with her Jamaican mom and Chinese dad. After completing her B.A in Language & Communication at the UWI (Mona) in 2011, she decided to take a leap of faith and moved to the US to seek a better opportunity for herself. Today she resides in the Bronx, New York and is the mother of a beautiful little princess, which she credits to motivating her and helping her develop her “go-getter” mentality. Although she admits that it is quite challenging having to juggle motherhood, her career and everything in between, luckily for her, she has a strong support system at home.

Caribbean Entertainment Hub caught up with Roxxi recently to gain some insight into her PR agency and how it all came to be.

So Roxxi, when did you realize your passion for entertainment and media?

You know growing up, I was that kid that was stuck inside watching TV, so I quickly became addicted to pop culture. Also, a lot of kids would hate watching news, not me (lol). I grew up admiring legendary broadcasters like Helen Coley- Nicholson and Dorain Samuels and so many more local Jamaican TV and Radio personalities. So from then I knew I wanted to be a TV/Radio broadcaster or do something in the media.

Roxxi Chung, CEO of “Roxxi Chung PR”

How did you get your start in the entertainment industry?

I first got my start in the entertainment industry when I started by own music blog back in 2008, called “Music Konnec”, because I loved and appreciated my reggae and dancehall culture, so it was a hobby that turned out to be more. Then around 2013, a music producer in Atlanta, Georgia noticed my blog content and introduced me to more than one online radio platforms, so I started writing entertainment news and presenting on air.

With my passion for media, I then landed an opportunity to become an on-air personality, producer, and digital content creator for Source Life Radio (SLR). There I also produced and hosted my very own weekly segment, “Top 20 Reggae and Dancehall Hitlist”, interviewing notable artists such as Ricky Blaze, Future Fambo, Kranium, K’coneil, Omari Banks and more.

What made you decide to venture into Public Relations (PR)?

At the beginning of 2019, I decided to switch gears to PR and became a PR Coordinator at a consulting agency called PlayBook MG, overseeing my own client’s campaign. There I gained industry experience while working alongside celebrity publicist Marie “Driven” Theodore who has represented Remy Ma, Papoose, Spice, Wyclef Jean, Lady Saw, Sting Jamaica, Mr. Vegas and more.

I then took a leap of faith into entrepreneurship and started my own PR Agency, “Roxxi Chung PR”, a full-service PR & Communications boutique focusing on entertainment & lifestyle brands.

How has 2020 affected you thus far?

It’s amazing how out of adversity and a pandemic I am able to still accomplish what I said I set out to do in 2020. I know for some they may have gotten discouraged and was left confused as to what to do next. However for me, during the whole pandemic I got super motivated to persevere and to pursue my goals. I even fell victim to COVID-19, and I still pushed through. It was as if the world slowed down to my advantage so I could catch up.

I used social media to my advantage to network, I attended PR webinars/ media courses and even found other creative means to keep my client’s campaign going with limited resources. I’m super proud of myself for sticking it through, because this entrepreneurial life was the furthest thing from my plans in life and I’m just getting started!
