Jamaica’s Protoje and Konshens Releases Brand New Albums

Written by: Nekisha Cyrus

From new albums to new releases, Jamaica’s music scene has been buzzing quite a lot lately with some of the top Reggae and Dancehall stars dropping their brand new albums that fans just can’t seem to get enough of.

First up, we have one of Reggae’s music most popular stars Oje Ken Ollivierre, who goes by the stage name ‘Protoje’. With over 15 years in the game, the ‘Who knows’ singer is considered one of Jamaica’s most influential artistes. Recently, Protoje released the deluxe edition of his 2020 album, ‘In Search of Lost time’ where he also executive produced and co-produced (5) out of the (13) original tracks featured.

The new extended project includes a brand new artwork and (3) additional tracks with two of which are remixes. The new tracks include ‘Still Royal’ which features Popcaan, Pa Salieu and Toddla T; ‘Still Blooming’ which features Lila Iké  and IzyBeats, and lastly a track called ‘Righteous’ which was released with a brand new visualizer directed by Yannick Reid (see below).

Shifting to Dancehall, it seems like Konshens has been keeping himself quite busy as he recently announced that he has an upcoming album on the way called ‘Red Reign’. The album will be released later this year but the lead single ‘Can’t Stay Sober’ is officially out now and touches on the issue of using alcohol or drugs to self-medicate.

Konshens, who over the years has given us some of our favorite dancehall hits such as ‘Gyal a Bubble’, ‘Bad Gyal, ‘Bruk off Yuh Back’ and more says that the single neither advocates for, or condemns, drinking and drug use. However, the track reflects on the toll that the pandemic has taken on society, and the steps he and others are taking to cope after taking stock of his own drinking. He even admitted to himself that he might even have a problem while sharing:

“The current climate of the world is forcing you into a state where it’s almost like you can’t stay sober. I’m not encouraging it, I’m acknowledging the reality. This is a stressful time, and people are searching for an escape.”

Seems like Konshens will be getting real and raw with this new project and we are definitely here for it.
Moving onto more updates on new album releases, it seems like congratulations are in order for Sean Paul, whose new Dancehall album ‘Live N Livin’ debut at No. 9 on the Billboard Reggae Chart. Not only has his new album debut on the Billboard charts, but his album ‘Sean Paul’s ‘Dutty Classics Collection’ also re-entered the chart at the No. 3 positions this week thanks to the promotional marketing for himself and his new album over the last few weeks.

According to Dancehallmag.com, the Temperature singer is also expected to release another album, ‘Scorcher’ in May under the auspices of Island Records. The LP is carded to feature American singer Gwen Stefani, Sia, Shenseea, Jada Kingdom, Stylo G, and more.

In other related Billboard charting news, it seems like Shaggy is going steady at No. 2 on the charts with his album ‘Best of Shaggy: The Boombastic Collection’, while the legend himself Bob Marley, continues his reign at No.1 for 63 weeks consecutively with his album ‘Legend: The Best of Bob Marley and The Wailers’.
