Guyanese Musicians Producing Uplifting Music

Written by: Jamel Grahame

Guyanese musicians have been hard at work producing well needed uplifting music as the country continues to deal with the Coronavirus pandemic. This review features many artistes including some new and rising stars with a surprise or two and some familiar voices.

New to Caribbean Entertainment Hub is Sean Sobers who tackled the issue of Domestic violence with a song entitled ‘valued’ featuring members of Kelvin Fortune’s newly formed Youths for Better Living (NGO).

Gospel Artiste Shawn English also added his voice to this inspirational mix with what he described as a soca gospel. The known risk-taker released ‘Public Announcement’ and encouraged fans to post  videos dancing to the song on tik tok. He continues to grow his brand and impress us with his style and vocal energy.

Another powerful song comes from recently featured Tennecia DeFreitas. Her hit song ‘Rise’ delivers an uplifting message for the black community. Performing under her new name, Nikeita, she enthralled us with her brilliant vocal styling as she communicated the pain and beauty of African heritage.

Also, addressing a major issues is Disi’s ‘payday’. The hit has become quite the anthem in Guyana and is probably one of the most relatable songs reviewed. Disi’s song speaks of the anxiety of local workers as they await their monthly salaries. It speaks to the hardships faced by many Guyanese working 9-5 jobs and struggling to make ends meet. The comical tone used to address these serious issues make for the right mix of light hearted fun and issue confrontation and is probably at the root of the songs popularity.

We cannot close this feature, without mentioning two of Caribbean Entertainment Hub favorite Guyanese musicians Brandon Harding and Dianna Chapman two of the biggest music acts in Guyana both hailing from Linden.  Brandon Collaborated with Guyanese Diaporan GT Youths and created arguably the groovy soca jam of the year entitled ‘Loco Loco.’ Brandon relied on his never-failing vocals and his ability to serenade a beautiful soca love song; coupled with the drastic rhythm changes the song is an undeniable stroke of artistic genius.

‘All eyes on me’ by Dianna Chapman brings this review to a close on a high note, literally, as Diana brings that R&B flavor and delivered a vocal showcase to rival the best in the business. The song which was released midnight September 2nd, 2020 is already becoming a fan favorite and receiving rave critical reviews. It doesn’t hurt that our own Jamel Grahame can be heard at the start of the track playing the role of paparazzi. (Talk about five minutes of fame).

Though not uplifting but popular is Jay Supreme’s ‘Gyalist Chat’.  Supreme teamed up with the ever controversial ‘Baby Skello’. Many were pleasantly surprised at his performance on the track and took to social media to give commendations.

Congratulations are in order to these Guyanese musicians. We at Caribbean entertainment hub urge that you listen to all these brilliant pieces mentioned in the review and make suggestions for other songs and artistes you would like to see in the review. we will continue to track and share with you the brilliance of the Guyana music Industry.
