Guyanese Diana Chapman: Natural Talented Performer

Written by: Jamel Grahame

Maybe she’s born with it? Diana Chapman took to the stage at the tender age of five (5) years old as a dancer.  This introduction to the stage would serve as the genesis of a lifelong love affair with the performing arts. She would go on to peruse other factions of the creative arts including Drama and of course music. Chapman would compete and place in many national competitions. She expressed, in an interview with Caribbean Entertainment Hub, that Soca Monarch (2020) was the first time she had ever competed and not placed; with her trademark humour she joked about the situation.

The GTT Guyana Star competition was a major turning point in Chapman’s career. Already a major star in her hometown Linden, GTT’s Stage introduced many to her Magical voice and irresistible performing style. Her performing style is reflective of her artistic versatility as her performances would constantly feature dramatic pieces and choreographed, high energy dance routines.   Her storied run on the show may not have yielded the ultimate fruit but nevertheless became a major stepping stone for her career.

She competed in 2011 while very pregnant and still managed to deliver constantly week after week. The otherwise light and friendly conversation took a solemn turn while discussing her pregnancy. She described it as a sad period which she thought would surely end her music career. Chapman’s resilience however cannot be overstated as she would in that very year win the Junior Calypso Monarch and place second in the Senior Monarch a record that she holds to date. She would return in 2013 to GTT and place third amidst a heavily competitive finale.

Now a mother, Radio Announcer and a full-time entertainer Chapman’s life is quite the balancing act. When asked how she manages all these many roles she explained that she works out a routine based on priorities that ensures each of her life’s roles receive necessary attention though this is not always the case. Diana continues to further her studies and is currently on the path to self-actualization.

Over the years Diana has to date released countless songs in many genres of music. She explained this could be linked to her struggles with finding herself as an artiste. She explained that she had always been passionate about R&B but experimented with other genres especially Soca and Calypso since these appealed to Guyana’s Caribbean culture. She has, however, released two R&B songs lately (‘Let Us Live’, ‘All Eyes On Me’) that have received critical and commercial acclaim and is likely to stick with the genre.

Future plans for the Superstar include recording her first Christmas song which she says will feature authentic Guyanese folklore and give life to the Guyanese Christmas experience and lots of charity works. She was reluctant to get too detailed as regards these plans for superstitious reasons.

Diana Chapman said that her advice to young artistes would be to work hard and remain humble, which she opines are grounding pillars for success in any arena. Stay tuned to Caribbean Entertainment Hub for more on this and other local superstars also look for our appearance in the naturally talented superstar’s new Christmas song.
