Guyana’s Senior & Junior Calypso Monarchs Along With Junior Soca Monarch Crowned

 Three Monarchs were crowned in one night as the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport held its annual Junior and Senior Calypso and Junior Soca Monarch Competition on February 19th, 2023 at the Guyana National Stadium.

12 Contestants took to the stage to perform for the judges and patrons in the adult leg of the Banks Calypso Competition but it was Roger “Young Bill Rogers” Hinds who swept the judges off their feet to cop the first place position with 249 points with his entry “Old Time Days”  this was followed by Diana Chapman with her entry “How Yuh Like Meh Now?” that secured second place with 246 points place giving way to Osei “OKC” Clarke and his entry “Guyanese” to position himself third place with 242 points  making way for the 2022 Monarch Faith “Lil Canary” Corrica rounding off the fourth position with 232 points with her entry “Better Daze”.

The juniors did not disappoint when it was time to take center stage to compete in their category. Young Theodora Denhert was the one who outshone her peers to be adjudged 245 points and was declared the winner with her song called “We Need Love” Simone Raywarm was four points behind Denhert and as such he settled for second place after performing his entry “Pressure” leaving Kizzy to secure third place with 246 points with her entry “Not another Day”.

The Evening also saw the juniors vying for the top spot in the Soca competition. Last year’s Calypso Monarch Vinel Hinds dethroned last year’s champion Osei “OKC” Clarke securing a solid 235 points with her energetic performance when she commanded the stage with her entry “Can’t Wait”. Teija Edwards also known as “KDB” came in second place amassing 219 points  with her entry “Lucky” giving way to Kizzy who secured another third place position with 211 points after performing “Happy”.
