Guyana Soca Monarch Brandon Harding Returns Home

Written by: Jamel Grahame

Brandon Harding makes a Triumphant return to the GTT stage on 1st July 2019 at the Movie Towne Parking Lot. Harding got his start in music via the GTT talent competition and will be featured at this year’s grand finale. The Guyanese born, who grew up in St. Lucia, had a meteoric rise in 2011 after winning the then, GTT jingle and song competition and has since become a household name here in Guyana. He reflected with nostalgia, his excitement at being selected to perform on the stage where he got his start. He said that that performing on this stage will indeed be special for him since in many ways GTT stage still feels like home.

Brandon Harding had developed an early love for music since his days competing in the junior calypso Monarch from the tender age Seven (7) years old. Harding explained that he has evolved as an artiste since then and now has to his credit several local and international recordings. He has done recordings with Tyson Pen, Derick Yarde, and even worked with Aria out of Iceland for his 2019 monarch winning smash hit “Alone.” Harding has performed on many stages locally and internationally including Martinique, Guadeloupe, St. Vincent, Trinidad and many other Caribbean Islands. He has also won the Carib Soca Monarch two consecutive years including this year’s closely contested and controversial monarch where he bested his closest competitor Steven Ramphal, previously featured on Caribbean Entertainment Hub, by one point.

Harding’s suave, sensual vocal styling’s, his ability to serenade his mostly female audiences, as well as his energetic and entertaining performances has given him a cult-like following.  His other attributes are: he is young, extremely easy on the eyes, and of mixed ethnic ancestry.  Since his days on the GTT Jingle and song competition he has evolved as an artiste but has primarily made music that sticks to his Caribbean Soca roots. However, Harding never fails to deliver on his authentic brand.  He blends the natural jubilation of the Soca Genre with his suave sensual sound to create an authentic Brandon Harding sound that resonates with his fans. Harding has an undeniably infectious onstage persona. He is humble and calm but also full of life and energy. Harding is known for packing on the entertainment value with high energy dancing, comedy and drama and of course crisps clean sounding vocals.

Brandon Harding explained that he has overcame many challenges in his career to get to where he is today.  He however said that he couldn’t entirely relate to the struggles of other Guyanese artiste to monetize their craft. He explained this was the case since most of his work was recorded in St. Lucia where there are copy right laws.  Harding explained that coming from his background he had difficulty dealing the Guyana Copy right troubles since it was an entirely foreign concept to him. He has had other struggles including rumors of disharmony with other artiste all of which Harding addressed by saying he has no personal grievances with anyone so if there are personal grudges it’s not on his part and he is unaware of such.

Outside of music the self-proclaimed “gyaliss” said that he leads a pretty simple life. He explained that while he is super humble and outgoing onstage he is introverted and shy off stage. Harding said he usually spends most of his time in the studio making music, Performing or practicing for a future performance. As he explained it, he goes from his bed to music and back. In terms of relationships Harding said, there is at present no Mrs. Harding in his life but he is a proud father of two. He told Caribbean Entertainment Hub that the Brandon Harding story would, be incomplete without the mention of his Manager Friend and mentor; Comedian/promoter and radio announcer Chow Pow. Harding describes Chow Pow as a father figure and a person for which he has the utmost respect.

Harding said he is at a point in his career where his focus is on building his brand and exposing Guyana and the rest of the world to his artistry. He explained that he doesn’t see much competing in his future though he wouldn’t rule it out entirely he believes that his career is going in a different direction. He has plans to release a soca Album later this year that features collaborations with Kwaci Ace and a possible collab with rival competitor from the soca monarch Jumo Primo who he referred to as a big brother and someone from which he draws much inspiration. When asked what advice he would give to upcoming artistes, Brandon said he would tell them that the road to stardom is not paved and that there will be many challenges. The aim is to ensure that music is your calling since it’s that calling that will strengthen you to face all the hard work.
