For most people, carnival conjures up images of people dancing in the streets during Mardi Gras in New Orleans or spectacularly costumed dance groups celebrating in Rio de Janeiro during the build up to Lent and most importantly the biggest Caribbean affair in Trinidad & Tobago.
Hearing that Guyana on the other hand will finally introduced this popular series of events in their own calendar is startling and brings a flood of excitement to many. This year, in the month of May, there will definitely be much to be anticipated by many locals and visitors alike for this will be the first time that Guyana will be hosting its very own Carnival, themed, ‘Genesis’.
The idea of having a carnival in Guyana stemmed from the 50th Anniversary that was recently celebrated. So many locals and visitors attended and supported the event that the then Minister of Tourism, Cathy Hughes, suggested that Guyana could capitalize on it and celebrate the event annually, while at the same time putting Guyana on the map as a carnival destination. The idea was debated and finally it was decided that Guyana will have its own carnival starting from May 18 – 27th, 2018. The news grabbed the attention of many sponsors and businesses who were ready to come on board and offer their assistance to make sure the carnival was world class and spectacular.
There were speculations that Guyana will never be able to pull of such an event like Trinidad. But the launching of bands on December 2nd, 2017, proved everyone wrong. Not only were the costumes amazing and unique, they showed off Guyana’s many resources and the promises of a great Carnival experience. These tantalizing previews made an impact on the audience. There all present got to see a glimpse of what the rest of the Caribbean was experiencing with their carnivals.
Like Trinidad and the rest of the Caribbean, Guyana carnival is expected to be no different as it promises an energetic and dynamic showcase of Guyanese culture, food, arts, entertainment and most importantly Miss Guyana World Pageant show – a highly anticipated and well attended event in Guyana. So, Guyanese and those coming in for the festivities are in for a real treat. Be prepared to see revellers out on the streets, dancing, ‘jumping up’, ‘wining down’ and basically having a ball.
The organizers for the carnival are more than pleased with the series of events that will accompany the celebration and the huge line up of Entertainers and International DJs. For those hoping to attend, below is a calendar of activities for this year’s Guyana Carnival.

So, grab your costumes, get your tickets and make sure you have your phone ready to take as much selfies as possible because no one wants to miss this event as revellers will be parading and dancing along the streets of Georgetown on Masquerade day. Look out for those exotic costumes and don’t forget to get one of your own. This experience is not one to be missed!
