During the University Of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) 2018 Awards ceremony, the King of Soca, Machel Montano was recognized for his outstanding contribution to the Trinidad and Tobago art form and was paid homage when he received an honorary ‘Degree of Arts’ for his exemplary accomplishments in the soca music industry.
When asked how he felt about this achievement, Dr. Montano said he felt absolutely grateful to the university and people of Trinidad & Tobago for bestowing such an honour to him, and that he is also humbled and proud to receive this award. A happy Machel even performed an acoustic version of the song that started it all, his 1986 hit ‘Too Young for Soca’.

With an incomparable soca career that that spreads over three decades, his energetic performances, musical catalogue and lists of titles and awards received is unparalleled. Each year the King of Soca gives us a front seat to his musical evolution and with 2018 winding down, his latest achievement is the perfect way to enter the 2019 carnival season. We are excited to see this new chapter unfolds.
