Christmas Jazz In Barbados

Written by: Simone Tull

Seventeen years later Christmas Jazz in Barbados, a Deryck Walcott production, continues to be one of the most highly anticipated events on the Barbadian Christmas calendar. Recently a large crowd gathered on the picturesque grounds of Ilaro Court, the official residence of the Prime Minister of the island for the latest edition.  While some patrons opted for the theatre-styled seating closest to the stage others pulled out their blankets and languished on the beautifully-manicured grounds.

Attendees were wowed with superb musicianship of the Christmas Jazz Band comprised of internationally acclaimed artistes who have worked with some of the biggest names in the industry. The line-up included Morris Pleasure whose accolades include working with Michael Jackson, Earth Wind and Fire and John Roberts who has worked with greats such as Janet Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Quincy Jones.

Though the catalogue of songs which was included in their set were familiar favourites members of the band added their own personal flair to them, making them even more enjoyable. Some of the songs receiving that special treatment were Away in a Manger, O Holy Night and Little Drummer Boy. Each musician had his time to shine in the limelight. Adrian Crutchfield was especially impressive as he showed his skill on multiple instruments.

The lone vocalist of the night was Laurin Talese, winner of the 2018 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition.   She was soulful with her delivery of This Christmas, Have Yourself a Merry Christmas and the Christmas Song.
