Caribbean Entertainment Hub Names Patrice Roberts Female Soca Artiste of 2022

Written by: Lesandra Scott

As 2022 comes to an end, it’s once again time to share who we at Caribbean Entertainment Hub have chosen as our Female Artiste of The Year. This year’s Award once again goes to Patrice Roberts. From her mega-crossover hit “Mind My Business”, her dominating Social Media presence, the effortlessness with which she killed every stage she graced, to her relationship publicly going to the next level, Patrice Roberts has throughout 2022 radiated poise, beauty, and success.

By the end of 2022, Patrice Roberts has become synonymous with impressive vocals, perseverance, endurance, and yes, water!  Although released in late 2021, her song “Mind My Business” which she did with Travis World, Dan Evens and written by Mical Teja, had people from all walks of life in a chokehold throughout 2022. Suddenly people were doing skits, making random videos, using her lyrics as captions, did steelpan covers and even dance videos. To the pleasant shock of many some of the contributors to the content derived from the song were celebrities such as Michelle Williams a former member of Destiny’s Child, Karlie Redd an American TV personality and main cast member of VH1’s reality show “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta”, Tabitha Brown who is an American actress, motivational speaker and social media personality, and Chilli from the American girl group, TLC.

Patrice who grew up in Toco, Trinidad, since stepping onto the Soca music scene in 2005 with her collaboration with Bunji Garlin called “The Islands”, has solidified her presence in the Soca arena in the Caribbean and by extension, the world. This was made easy as their collaboration was used by the Trinidadian Ministry of Tourism for promotional commercials. In 2006, shortly after Patrice sang her way into the spotlight, she became one of the frontline vocalists and the only female vocalist in the very popular band, Xtatik. Patrice then went on to be named the youngest female Road March winner for her collaboration with Machel Montano on their hit single “Band Of The Year” where her vocals shone.

Throughout 2022, Patrice Roberts graced stages in several places, including locations on her April and May tour which included Turks and Caicos, St. Marteen, St. Thomas USVI, Grenada, the Bahamas, New York, and Texas. Other places that she performed outside of the tour include St. Lucia, Barbados, Texas, Canada, Puerto Rico, Miami, and Antigua and Barbuda where she was proposed to by her then-boyfriend and fellow artiste, Ricardo Drue. Earlier in the year, she performed in Mexico at the destination party of Machel Montano, our Soca Artiste of The Year’s event, Melé.

With the year coming to an end Patrice continues to expand her boundaries with new collaborations. Mere days ago, she released a collaboration with Freetown Collective and DJ Private Ryan, prior to that in early December she released a collaboration with Tano called Grown Up, and ahead of Trinidad’s 2023 carnival, she released a song done with Alison Hinds, Queens Orders.

Last year, according to Spotify, Patrice wrapped up 2021 with 699.7K listeners in 176 countries with 7.7M streams. This year, Patrice wrapped up 2022 with 2.1M listeners in 183 countries with 15.3M streams! Cheers to Patrice Roberts on the growth over the course of the 12 months we know as 2022.  In 2021, she had under her belt “Toxic Love” done with her love, Ricardo Drue; this year, in 2022, she continued to break the internet though this time, with “Mind My Business” despite it being released late 2021. As it stands, eager eyes are looking in her direction where dominating another batch of 12 months is concerned. Also, to be noted is her social media presence and her stellar fashion choice throughout the year.  What do you think? Third time’s the charm?
