Brass Bacchanal 2020: Ecstasy When Brass Meets Bacchanal

Now in its second year, Brass Bacchanal  which takes place on Carnival Monday night has brought the Brass element back to the Trinidad Carnival scene. This fast-growing competition saw a total of twelve (12) of the Top Brass bands in Trinidad & Tobago competing for a first prize of $100,000.

The National Carnival Committee (NCC) event took place on February 24th 2020 at the North Park, Queen’s Park Savannah with Brass lovers and patrons packed with coolers coming to witness the ecstasy that takes place when Brass meets Bacchanal. Also in attendance were Her Excellency Paula-Mae Weekes, President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the Honorable Minister of Community Development, Culture and the Arts, Dr. Nyan Elizabeth Gadsby Dolly.

With each band bringing their A-game on the night, ‘Temperature the Band’ stole the show performing their rendition of ‘Woman on the Bass’ and winning the first prize with a total of 248 points. (See video at the top of article)

This year’s competition also saw a tie for the second place position between the ‘Brass to the World’ and the ‘Trinidad & Tobago Police Band’ both performing ‘Wrong Again’ and each receiving at total of 245 points.

 

 

 

 

 And taking home the fourth place position, was the Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service Band performing ‘Power in Soca’ with a total of 239 points.

 

 

Other bands featured in the finals were KJV the Band, Ultra-Brass studio, ImJI & Co, Trinidad and Tobago Regiment Band, Kelly Green & harmony, Blaxx and D All starz Band, D Soca Unit and Errol Ince & The Music Makers Orchestra.

The bands were judged on a point system which included Harmonic textures, Thematic development, Dynamics, F Jam, Articulation and Creativity. This year’s Brass Bacchanal qualified panel of judges consisted of, from left Kenny Phillips, Kenneth Clarke, Lambert Philip, E.D. Wade and Anthony Woodroffe.

But the live entertainment didn’t just stop there, this year’s event also featured live guest performances by the Soca legend himself- Super Blue, the Soca princess- Nailah Blackman and the 2019 Groovy Soca Monarch Winner-Swappi.
