Blaze Anthonio is a young talented Guyanese Artist who burst on to the scene in early 2017. His short musical catalog shows that he is well on his way in creating a unique sound that is authentically Guyanese. His initial popularity could be credited to his work at creating the Guyanese version of Trinidad Ghost’s “Dem Does Horn” with a song titled ‘Blow’. Blow is the Guyanese word for infidelity as horn is for Trinidadian. The song while sticking to the original theme of identifying unfaithful women, also highlights many unique aspects of Guyanese lifestyle including: the popular eating house Compton Cook- up, Palm court and the data issues (one day plan).
Blaze fame increased when he released a political satire called “Rape in the Parliament”. This addressed what was described as an abominable display by Guyanese parliamentarians. The song was released approximately 24 hours after the incident occurred and was a viral hit within minutes of its official release. Blaze Anthonio Continues to use real life situations in his endeavor to create an authentic Guyanese sound.
‘Lilly Gal’, Blaze’s latest hit, falls directly into his unique brand of artistry. The song samples a Guyanese folk song of the same title that speaks of a young lady who is growing up way too fast. The Folk song displays a complex societal relationship whereby the adults in the society are critical of the demeanor of a young woman on one hand, while on the other hand, some are partially responsible for the young woman’s accelerated projectile into womanhood.
Blaze Anthonio sampled the folk song for his new release. With his always creative lyrical styling’s he teleported Lilly Gal from her original pre-colonial setting and placed her in our modernized society. No longer was Lilly Gal on the damn being targeted by men but she was now a modern girl, with her smart phone and increased exposure experiencing similar harassment. The brilliance of the song can be seen in light of its paradox between our societal metamorphosis and how cultural norms transcend generational boundaries. Blaze Anthonio in an arguably genius move demonstrated how even as we grow and modernize as a society there are certain ill-fated aspects of our culture that continue to plague us even today. Laced with authentic Guyanese slangs and dialect Blaze Antonio brought to life modern day Lilly Gal, exploring the differences of and similarities between the two characters.
Lilly Gal by Blaze Anthonio is indeed a brilliant piece of new musical literature that features the creative meshing of an authenticated Guyanese sound and recording qualities equaling and rivaling western standards.
