As Predicted Samuel Medas Wins Guyana’s 2021 Soca Monarch

Written by: Jamel Grahame

It was as epic as predicted but it was again the newcomers that took the top spot with Samuel Medas winning the Soca Monarch his first-ever entry and Kevin Singh winning for the Chutney Monarch as well in his first entry.

Monarch Samuel’s hit song as was previously reported was an early fan favourite so it came as no surprise when he took home the coveted prize. While there were much discussion and controversy surrounding the fact that he is a gospel artiste and his performance lacked the usual gyrations synonymous with soca music many are not surprised by the verdict.

Speaking to the Guyana Chronicle, Medas said about the winning song, ‘Stadium,’. “I wanted this song to be a song of encouragement, especially in the second verse when I said, ‘I know we had a tough year’ and I wanted to remind people that despite everything that is happening, we can still rely on God and he is going to take care of us,” Medas continued: “The stadium is more than a song, it is a lifestyle, because the stadium is the place where nobody don’t watch no face, nobody goes to see who is African, who is East Indian and who is Amerindian. We go there for one purpose and that is to celebrate …and I think that message was received.”

Medas defeated a talented pack including Ladies of the night  Diana Chapman and Nekeita who rounded out the top three.  Veteran Jumo Primo had to settle for a hard-fought fourth place amongst the talented pack.

Kevin Singh defeated a talented field including a past monarch winner and one of Guyana’s most consistent performers Bunty Singh to seal the deal on the coveted crown other runner-ups include Young Bill Rogers and Venita Willie.
