Army Fete 2020: Soca And Valentine

Written by: Nekisha Cyrus

From surprise proposals to surprise performances, love was definitely in the air at Army Fete 2020, making it an experience truly to be remembered.

The safest fete in carnival was recently transformed to the love zone on Friday 14th February as this year’s event took place on Valentine’s Day. Whether you were heading to the VIP Valentine’s Deck or the General area, patrons and flag crews gathered in their numbers ready to fete and celebrate as the Queen’s Park Savannah hosted yet another installment of the popular and historic Army Fete.

This year’s Army Fete Cast featured some of the leading Soca Artistes and Top Soca Bands. This massive line up included Patrice Roberts, Nadia Batson, Bunji Garlin, Fay-Ann Lyons, Skinny Banton, Voice, Iwer George, Skinny Fabulous, Trinidad Killa and many more.

With each artiste hyped and ready to move the crowd, here are a few memorable performances of the night:

Patrice Roberts came ready to heat up the place dressed in a sexy camouflage and red ensemble. She brought her dance army to the stage as she performed hits like ‘Is We’, ‘Band of the Year’, ‘Ah Little Wine’, ‘Sweet Fuh Days’, and not to mention the sexy 2020 anthem ‘Carry On’ and more.

The Viking & Viqueen of Soca alongside their Asylum band, started the bacchanal early bringing nothing but pure vibes to the stage. From performing many of their collective hits, impromptu freestyles about technical difficulties, they even invited a foreigner to enjoy the ‘Fay-Ann Fete Diving Off Stage Experience’. Eyes were glued to them from beginning to end. However, no one could have predicted that towards the end of their performance Cupid’s arrow was going to fly when Boom 94FM Radio Personality, Linx surprised his love with a surprise wedding proposal that left the crowd screaming and many in tears. Making this Valentine’s night even more memorable. Take a look below!

Now onto the headliners of the night! Of course when Kes the band reach in the fete it was nothing but niceness. He delivered hit after hit as the crowd screamed along to songs like ‘Boss Lady’, ‘Savannah Gras’ and many, many more. But the crowd definitely got a surprise when he was joint on stage by Iwer George to perform their mega-hit and Road March contender ‘Stage Gone Bad’. He later also invited ‘Commander’ Voice, who was dressed and ready to perform their feting anthem ‘Dear Promoter’.

Onto our next headliner, the King of Soca, Machel Montano alongside his Monk band and Dancers came to celebrate on Valentine’s Night. Dressed in all Red, the Colour of Love, Machel gave his first performance as a married man. Yes, I said married man! Earlier on Friday 14th February, Machel Montano married his bride Rennie Butcher at the newly renovated Parliament building, making them the first couple to be married there. CEH will like to congratulate them both.

With the love festivities in the air, the Soca King delivered another energetic Army fete performance this year. He sang a medley of his hits and invited fellow artistes Teddy Rhymez and Salty to the stage with him. Patrons were also in for a surprise treat when he brought Iwer George, Skinny Fabulous and a professional conch shell blower on stage for a true conch shell musical experience as they performed ‘Conch Shell’.

As the curtain closes on another Army Fete experience. This year brought with it the perfect fusion of music, love and unity.  Did you attend Army Fete 2020? What were some of  your favorite highlights of the night? Let us know in the comments below!
