Yes! ‘Chutney Zess’ the mixing of Chutney music with Trinibad (Trinidad home-grown dancehall) has recently been birthed. The creation took place when two top proponents in their genre, Ravi B a Chutney megastar, and Jahllano one of the top Trinibad artistes, collaborated on ‘Rum In Meh Vein’ and set the industry abuzz in January this year.
It is worth mentioning the mixing of Chutney and Dancehall is not a novel thing. In a recent interview with producer Big Rich from the Punkalunks Factory, ‘Big Rich’ told CEH: “I decided to take an Indian song and put it with a dub beat. The first song I did it with was called ‘Mere Naseeb’ and a dub song called ‘Hot This Year’. I put it on a tape and the country and all over went crazy about it. So, I decided to do a full cassette tape with Indian music and dub beat which was called ‘The Ten Thousand’. I am the man who invented all these Indian dub mixes”. The full interview can be read here.
As we move into summer, more Chutney artistes are jumping on the ‘Chutney Zess’ bandwagon and introducing elements of dancehall into their music. A quick research has so far revealed the following first 6 tracks that contain this unique mixture of West Indian culture.
