Guyana’s Talent Search Judging Controversy

Written by: Jamel Grahame

It was a wild and thrilling ride on the bus on the second week of the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports Talent search. Due to the coronavirus restrictions, the auditions were submitted virtually so last Sunday marked the first face-to-face interactions between the judges and the contestants. It turned out to be quite an entertaining 90 minutes as the spirited cast of judges brought their individual flavour to spice up the competition.  Whether it was an impromptu freestyle from DJ. Akelo about his love for chicken or an improvised Passa Passa dance featuring all the judges even an initially hesitant Poonam Singh; there was never a dull moment.

The contestants also spared no punches as the drama heated up with tears, laughter, second chances, and some of the hardest working and diverse talents to ever be seen on any such stage. Though it wasn’t all glitz and glory for all the contestants they all definitely left their hearts on the stage. In hopes to get past the scrutiny of the esteemed panel of judges.

It is, however, the very judges, who are being faced with their own public scrutiny, with many trolling the judges challenging their credentials and readiness to judge such a competition. There has been an onslaught of social media discussions about the judges selected to preside over this competition. Some are calling for a more diverse panel claiming that since the competition embodies so many factions of the arts, the competition would benefit from a panel with a wider knowledge base relating to the entire artistic fraternity.  Others registered dissatisfaction with what they are calling overcompensating judges and general questions as regards their readiness for this undertaken.

In the face of the many criticisms, the show must go on. The judges and production crew along with the dedicated hard-working talents, however, still managed to put on quite the show as Host Ferlize Roberts clearly opined there is no denying that the judges are spirited and make for great entertainment.

We at Caribbean entertainment Hub want to acknowledge the Ministry of Culture for this timely undertaking and wish the entire production cast, the judges, and talents all the best going forward.
