Antigua & Barbuda Calypso Legend ‘King Swallow’ Has Died

Written by: Taneika Thomas

The calypso fraternity is mourning the death of Antigua and Barbuda Calypso legend, Sir Rupert ‘The Mighty Swallow’ Philo, who died on Friday, 11th September 2020 at the age of 78. It is reported that Swallow was surrounded by family at his home when he passed after suffering from a prolonged illness.

The veteran was recognised for his nearly 60 years of contribution to the soca and calypso artform by the Trinbago Unified Calypsonian Organisation who paid him tribute. In a statement, the organization said: “During this time the vibrant, fiery and pulsating rhythms of his soca hits have created frenzy wherever and whenever he performs.”

King Swallow’s music focused on social and political commentary. He was credited by former Prime Minister, Hon. Lester Bryant Bird, as marking “the birth of the political calypso in Antigua.” He was knighted by his country for his outstanding contribution to culture and to calypso.

King Swallow is a four-time Calypso Monarch and five-time Road March winner in Antigua and Barbuda. He was awarded the Order of Merit (Gold), and the Grand Cross of Princely Heritage by the government of the Labour Party. Swallow’s songs ‘Fire in the Backseat’, ‘Subway Jam’, ‘Party In Space’ and ‘Satan Coming Down’ gained him popularity in Trinidad and Tobago where he regularly performed during the carnival season at the height of his career.
